Dental care is something that everybody needs but it's not always affordable. If you (or the members of your family) need dental care and you don't have dental insurance, there are a few things that you can do to save money. By following these tips, you can get the services you need without spending your entire paycheck on your teeth.
1. Consider going to a local dental school that offers cleanings and services at a discount. Dentists and dental assistants have to learn somewhere. You can help them with their training and save money at the same time. If you feel uneasy about letting a student work with you, be assured that they are supervised by their teachers. Look in the yellow pages for local dental schools and see if they offer these services.
2. Choose your dentist wisely. Although it may be appealing to go to a dental clinic that offers extra services and extended hours, they normally charge more. All of the convenience that you get with such a clinic will probably come at a price that is passed on to the customers. Look for an independent dentist who works out of his or her own office. The charges for specific services may be cheaper, and you may be able to negotiate a flexible payment plan for your dental care. Use your yellow pages to find an independent dentist in your area who has openings in his or her schedule.
3. Shop around for different dentists, and don't be afraid to get a second opinion. If your dentist tells you that you need an expensive procedure, visit another dentist and get a second quote. Ask around and even do some Internet research to make sure that you aren't overpaying for a procedure. This is especially important when it comes to orthodontic work. Find out how much different orthodontists charge for braces or similar procedures so you can save money. The cost of an additional exam may be well worth it if you save hundreds on braces.
4. If you have a lot of dental costs but don’t have insurance, look into purchasing a discount dental plan. This isn’t traditional insurance, but it can help you save money. These programs typically offer a percentage reduction on specific dental procedures. By paying a low monthly fee you’ll have access to the discounts on everything from cleanings to more serious dental work.
The best way to save money on dental care is to take care of your teeth properly. By brushing and flossing daily, you can help prevent cavities and other dental problems.
Teach your children to brush and floss, as well. Limit their use of sugary treats and make sure they don’t eat or drink anything after brushing at night. These habits will go a long way to preventing excessive dental costs down the road. n
