Many sports fans think tennis player Roger Federer is a great role model for kids and a person to follow to help them as their personality grows. I am going to look at some of the latest news events in the world of Roger Federer. Over the last decade there has been plenty of Roger Federer news headlines that all have made interesting reading. He has gained the reputation as one of the best tennis players of all time and is currently sat at umber 3 in the ATP rankings (April 2013). Here is just five of his news worthy achievements over the last ten years. Charity work is extremely important for Federer. He supports many charities and founded the Roger Federer Foundation in 2003. UNICEF made him a Goodwill Ambassador in 2006 and he has arranged and taken part in multiple events that made the news including; Rally for Relief for those affected by the Indian Ocean earthquake in 2004, Hit for Haiti to raise funds for the victims of the Haiti Earthquake and Rally for Relief in support of those affected by the Queensland floods in 2010 and 2011. In 2004 Federer became the first male player to win three Grand Slam titles since Mats Wilander in 1988. He defeated Marat Safin at the Australian Open, Lleyton Hewitt at the US Open and Andy Roddick at Wimbledon. That was the year he worked his way to become the top player in the world for the first time in his career. In 2007 Federer made it to the finals of all the Grand Slam events. That year he managed to win three including the US Open, Wimbledon and the Australian Open. He ended the year at number one in the ATP rankings after winning four of the ATP Masters Series 1000 finals and losing at two of them. Despite suffering from mononucleosis Federer managed to win the doubles Gold Medal at the 2008 Olympic Games along with Stanislas Wawrinka. He was beaten by Nadal at the French Open and Wimbledon which meant he was unable to break the record held by Bjorn Borg for six straight wins. During 2012 Federer made it to the final at Wimbledon for the eighth time. He defeated Andy Murray in four sets and regained his number one ranking equalling him with Pete Sampras as it was his seventh win there. A month later and he took part in the final of the 2012 London Olympics where he managed to win a Silver medal after being defeated by Andy Murray in the final which was also held on the centre court at Wimbledon. So far this year in 2013 Federer is not having the best of years, but there is still lots to play for so watch this space and keep up to date with all the latest roger Federer news events. Roger Federer was born in 1981 and was a top junior tennis players in Switzerland. He turned pro in 1997, and as a pro his first huge event was when he beat the reigning Wimbledon champion Pete Sampras at Wimbledon 2001. Federer was the very first Swiss man to win a senior Grand Slam title, and he now has 17 to his name.
