Taking care of your teeth at home can help you maintain your dental health and prevent periodontal gum disease and cavities from developing. While it seems like common sense to you, it doesn’t always translate the same to children. Many children will see taking care of teeth as another useless chore that they don’t want to do. This is when you need to step in as a parent and remind them of the importance of good oral hygiene and a healthy set of teeth. Here are five routines to get your children in the habit of to lead them to a healthy smile. Brush Brushing your teeth at least twice a day or after every meal is recommended by the dentists. Have children use a timer to ensure that they're spending at least three minutes brushing. Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and replace brushes at least once in two months. Teach them to hold the brush in a 45-degree angle and brushing in gentle strokes and in a circular. Also remind them that cleaning their tongue along with brushing their teeth daily helps oral hygiene. Floss A plaque-free mouth is a healthy mouth. Flossing at least once a day daily to clean between teeth where a brush can't reach is a good habit children can follow. Food particles that are stuck in between the teeth can cause plaque, gingivitis, tooth decay, bad breath and cavities. Limit Intake of Sodas rnLimit soda or any type of sports drinks for your children. Most of these beverages have acidic acid and phosphoric acid which are not good for teeth enamel. These acids are so strong that with each sip, they make holes in the surface causing cavities in the long run. Caffeine in these carbonated drinks also discolors the tooth enamel. Push to have your kids drink water more frequently in place of soda. If your children are tempted to drink these sugary drinks, encourage them to brush their teeth immediately to avoid damage. Avoid Snacks and Sugars rnAvoid snacking in between meals and cut down on sugary treats. Foods we eat are turned into acid by the bacteria in our mouth which causes gum disease (gingivitis) and cavities. Sugar, potato chips, bread and cereals are carbohydrates that are not good for healthier teeth. Like drinking sodas, try to brush your teeth after enjoying one of these snacks when you can. Regular Dental Check-Ups Dental check-ups and dental cleaning also help to maintain good, healthy teeth. Mouth cancers and other serious oral problems are detected by dentists during the dental visits. Regular dental check-ups and visits to experts, like Smile Makers Dental, can be a habit that children can follow throughout their life to maintain healthier teeth. By having your children follow all these steps, they will not only have beautiful teeth but also have fresh breath to go with it. A smile is the prettiest thing one can wear and healthier teeth lead to just that. As your kids grow up with great oral hygiene, they will have you to thank for helping them achieve it.
