It's a rainy day, the kids are restless, and you are looking for something fun to do as a family. Here are a few tips we have compiled to turn your rainy day into a fun day with the family: 1. Play Games Together In the hectic pace of school, life, and work, it can be hard to find time to sit down and play games. Now you can sit down with your children and play your favorite family board games. Take out some of those old board games like chess or RISK or Settlers of Catan. Or bring out a large puzzle and have everyone work on it together. Or do a more verbal game like charades or Scattergories that gets everyone talking. 2. Do An Art Project Together Maybe you have been waiting for the right moment to paint your child's room, refurnish that table, or try out a craft project you saved on your Pinterest board. A rainy day is the right time to try something creative. Break out those paintbrushes, markers, glue, acrylics, and whatever else you have on hand and work on making something beautiful. 3. Camp Indoors We all know how much fun camping can be. There is nothing quite like being outdoors, staying in a tent, and roasting s'mores over an open fire. Though you have to stay away from the fires and the great outdoors, you can still recreate a fun camping experience for your kids right in your living room or their bedrooms. If you don't have space for an actual tent, set up a "tent" with blankets, chairs and tables. Give everyone a flashlight and some pillows to take into their tent. Make some microwave s'mores, "roast" some hot dogs, and pop some popcorn in the microwave. Turn down the lights and sit in a circle to sing songs and tell ghost stories. 4. Bake Or Cook Together There is nothing quite like fresh baked goodies on a rainy day. Dig out some old family recipes and try them out. You can tell stories of the people you inherited the recipes from. Or try out old favorites of your own. Have your children help if they are old enough. Or let them pick which recipe they want to try out. If you are not sure what to make, go online and find recipes at Pinterest or a cooking website. Or go to your bookshelf and find old cookbooks. A rainy day is the perfect day to try out a new recipe or resurrect an old one. Baking will also warm up your house, make it smell really good, and create delicious, beautiful memories for your loved ones. And if you're looking for something healthier than baked goodies, let the kiddos help you make lunch or dinner by letting them add the ingredients to the soup maker or slow cooker. 5. Set Up Your Own Film Festival Nothing beats restlessness quite like a good movie, or several. Come up with a theme for your film festival, like Star Wars or Funny Old Movies or International Delights. Pop some popcorn in the microwave or break out some other treats. Grab some blankets and pillows so everyone can get cozy and comfortable. Make up some score cards, where each member of your family can vote on the funniest movie, the most serious movie, the worst movie, etc. Tally up the scores at the end and post them on the refrigerator for everyone to discuss at their leisure. Whatever you do, make sure it is fun for the whole family and make it a group activity so that no one feels left out. And don't forget to take lots of pictures, so you can remember the great times you had!
