If there is one thing that terrifies most people, especially small business owners, it is cold calling. This can be a pretty scary prospect, especially for those who do not feel that their sales skills are quite up to scratch, but, once you get the hang of it, it is a truly great way to get all kinds of new sales leads. You need to follow certain steps, and of course be highly motivated to be any good at cold calling, but everything will come in time, as long as you keep at it. To get you on your way, here are five great ways to make cold calling work for you: Do it in person: The majority of people tend to not read a lot of their emails, especially if they are from unfamiliar sources. Once you have met for the first time, then it is more acceptable to call or send an email. If you really want to make sure that you are going to be able to deliver your pitch, going right to the source is a lot easier than sitting around and waiting for customers to call or respond to an email. Get out there and start meeting as many people as possible, and start generating all kinds of leads for your business. Do consultative selling: Don't focus on making a sale. This will show through, and people will not always be as interested in doing business with you as they might have previously been. It will work much better for you if you concentrate on consulting, and finding ways to help your clients. This is the best way to go about making a sale. It shows that you are conce ed about the needs of your clients, and that you will go out of your way to help them. You may even have to send them to your competition if you do not have what they are looking for, but they will be so impressed by this that they will probably do business with you later on. Never stop trying until you get it right: You are going to make all kinds of mistakes in the beginning, so don't be too disappointed when you do. It happens to the best of us. Sales are not easy, but the more you do it, the better at it you are going to get. You need to learn how to take rejection, and how to get in good with those who have rejected you in the past, and in time, you will learn these skills and be able to put them to good use. The more mistakes you make early on, the more, and quicker, you are going to learn. You need to concentrate on follow-up: This is just as important as cold calling. Even if a potential customer is not interested in what you are selling today, this doesn't mean that they are not going to want to do business with your further on down the road. This is why it is a good idea to always keep the lines of communication open, and perform follow-ups every so often with clients who turned you down. Follow-ups are a great way to be able to convert leads into customers. Improve your process: You probably have a sales process that you use. Make sure that you are constantly improving on your process. When you see something that isn't working, change it. This is going to take time, but after a while, you will have a process that works really great for you. This is all a part of the learning process, and you are going to be learning plenty over the years. Learn more about consumer behaviour, body language, negotiating, and more to improve your conversion rate.
