With the popularity of the industry on the rise, applying for a web design job is getting more and more competitive. Whereas once there may have only been three or four applicants, there is now well over ten, sometimes into the twenties and thirties. Because of this, your resume is becoming more important than ever; after all, it’s the first look that a prospective employer will have of you, so you need to make the best first impression possible.

  1. You don’t have a portfolio or you don’t include it
No prospective employer wants to search for your work, so make it easy to find. List the website where your portfolio is stored in the header of your resume and make sure that the URL is correct. Just because you say that you’re a ‘10’ in Photoshop doesn’t mean that the employer is going to take your word for it; it’s likely they’ll want to double check.
  2. You’re out of touch
When putting your portfolio together, take a moment to look through the work of others in the web design field. What sorts of techniques and styles are they using? How does your work compare? If you don’t think you’re in the same league as some of these other designers, make sure that you work on improving these areas. Use your resume to list the ways that you are aiming to improve your skills.
  3. You don’t pay attention to the job description
When putting your resume together, ask yourself what on earth your part time job waiting on tables for three years has to do with web design. You need to make sure that your resume has been tailored to the job that you are applying for. Use your cover letter to tell prospective employers why you will be a good hire. And don’t use the same resume and cover letter for every single job you apply for – it’s obvious if you do.
  4. You don’t have any noteworthy projects
Getting started in the web design game will often mean that you don’t have much noteworthy work, but there is nothing wrong with this as long as you have the willingness to make this sort of work happen. If you have a skill that you haven’t used in a project yet or a client completely sabotaged your work, take on your own project and add it to your portfolio.

Keep in mind that you are a designer, so your resume needs to reflect this sense of creativity and imagination. Whilst you shouldn’t sacrifice the standard elements of a resume, you can give the document your own creative flair and ensure that it speaks volumes about your interest in web design Melbourne. This is one of the best ways to get your name moved into the interview pile, which is where you can really let your talent shine.
