Taking the following steps will show your employer that you are an ambitious employee with leadership potential. 1. Define Your Leadership Style By analyzing your leadership style in the workplace, you can mold your strengths and weaknesses into a style of your own. Each type of leader has specific characteristics: The Pacesetter: This style of leader has aggressive skills and motivation that inspires everyone in the office by setting a good example. The Authoritarian: For experts in their fields, the authoritarian style is a strong style. With special knowledge, this leader can take the reigns of the company into new territory with confidence. The Coach: Employees who bring out the best in each individual in the company to bolster the business are great coaches. A great leader can see and encourage the strengths of others with tact. The Democrat: By encouraging cooperation and sharing of ideas, this type of leader makes each person of the team feel included, leading to greater teamwork. The Initiator: In situations in which tact, speed, and diplomacy are needed, great leaders can delegate tasks effectively. By being mentally agile, a leader can improve their leadership skills. To be a better leader, an employee must be able to accurately access his or her own strengths and weaknesses. By utilizing strong characteristics and improving upon the weak ones, any employee can become a better leader in the office. 2. Improve Your Communication Skills Managers can become better leaders in the office by honing their communication skills. Good skills equate to being approachable by all employees for constructive feedback. Employees should feel comfortable about sharing their ideas and concerns with their supervisor. Great communication skills also mean being open to criticism and feedback from others. Great leaders realize that employees may have valid ideas on improving the work place. 3. Be a Passionate Motivator The best leaders in business are passionate about their work and inspire the same in their employees. By defining a group purpose and getting the entire team excited about it, all employees will share the same passion for a mission or a product. When employees are passionate about what they do, it is obvious in the results. If the boss or owner of a company is not passionate about the company, employees may be uninspired. 4. Offer Rewards and Recognition To become a better leader at the office, managers should not underestimate the value of rewards and recognition for those employees who go beyond what is expected of them. When hard work is noticed, employees feel a sense of appreciation and inspiration to keep working hard. Publicly thanking an employee for their hard work is a proven strategy to improve moral and encourage dedication. 5. Master the Art of Team Building Great leaders build great teams. Great leaders are not threatened when surrounded by intelligent people, in fact, they surround themselves with people that may know more than they do. They realize that for the business to be the best it can, it will require as much talent and experience as it can get from top to bottom. A great leader is capable of building an effective and diversified team with a variety of ideas and solutions. By hiring the best and brightest, a leader puts the needs of the business above his own ego.
