All athletes have to deal with a variety of sporting injuries from time to time. No matter how careful they have been in terms of warming up before exerting themselves they will inevitably get injured. Some of these injuries such as bruises, cuts and even broken bones happen because of hard impact or even an awkward effort. Others like strains and ligament damage tend to happen because certain parts of the body are used repeatedly over a very long period of time. An athlete needs to be able to deal with injuries in the correct manner or else he or she will not be able to perform well. As a matter of fact, incorrect care of sporting injuries has resulted in many athletic careers coming to an untimely end. The following are the most popular ways of dealing with these problems: 1. RICE therapy: This is an acronym for Rest, Ice, Compression and Elevation. In fact, most athletes (and their coaches or caregivers) are experts in these self-care techniques and ensure that the injury gets prompt attention. However, this is only suitable for minor sprains or even for slight damage to muscles or ligaments. Even so, if the problem persists after 48 hours then a doctor’s advice should be sought because the pain indicates that the problem is a large one. 2. Non-prescription painkillers: These drugs help to bring down the level of pain and also reduce inflammation of the area. Obviously this too should not be attempted if the injury is severe. Also, the drugs should be non-steroidal in nature. 3. Physiotherapy: A physiotherapist will use a variety of techniques including massage and manipulation to bring the injured part back to fitness. 4. Surgery: There are times when surgery simply cannot be avoided. If the muscles are badly torn or if joints are highly inflamed then surgery will be the only option. Doctors these days offer keyhole surgery which ensures that the patient does not feel a lot of discomfort and also recovers quickly. 5. Alternative therapies: Many athletic coaches recommend the use of massage, heat therapy or ultrasound treatment to help their charges recover quickly from sporting injuries. However, these therapies do not have support from all people. It is very important for athletes to deal with their sporting injuries promptly and correctly. When it comes to surgery they should always rely on an experienced surgeon who can bring them back to fighting fitness very easily.
