Experiencing emotional trauma can be one of the hardest moments of your life. As you replay the events in your mind, it can seem overly difficult to focus on anything else. To get relief, you can participate in these five different strategies below.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)

This is what’s commonly known as talk therapy. It’s a highly recommended treatment plan that works for trauma like PTSD, depression, and anxiety. Via the direction of your therapist, you’ll both work through your negative thought patterns and challenge them. By doing this, you can better change your thought patterns regarding the trauma. This type of therapy typically lasts for about 16 sessions. You can opt for one-on-one counseling or group therapy.

Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT)

Apart from normal CBT, you can also undergo CPT. This is a type of talk therapy that works to reduce symptoms involved in trauma recall. With this type of therapy, you’ll be asked to recall the entire traumatic event. Then, you’ll work with your therapist to recall the event and change your response to it. This type of therapy usually lasts about 12 sessions.

Brief Eclectic Psychotherapy (BEP)

This type of therapy works based on having you relive the trauma and assess what you learned from it. You can expect to undergo about 16 sessions with this style of treatment. You can expect to spend the first few sessions recalling the trauma and bringing in physical reminders like clothing or mementos. In the last few sessions, you’ll discuss how the trauma has changed you and what you’ve learned from it.

A ketamine clinic may be helpful for those who need to be put into a more relaxed state when discussing their past trauma. Alternately, ketamine may prove to be helpful to you on its own, separately from the psychotherapy. Recently, it is being used to treat mental illnesses that have not been helped with other means.

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing Therapy (EMDR)

This type of treatment approach focuses more on your brain’s processing of the trauma than identifying your emotions and reactions about it. This form of psychotherapy works to eliminate the stress associated with your traumatic memories. EMDR works to alter the processing of the traumatic event in your brain so that you can forge new associations of the event.

Prolonged Exposure (PE)

This particular type of therapy is a little more involved than traditional talk therapy. It works on the basis of exposing you to the traumatic event for short periods of time while in the safe environment of your therapist. The idea is that by re-experiencing the event in a safe confine, it will lose its power over you. With this type of therapy you may find that your therapist will work to re-create the situation via by taking you to a similar event or area. Expect to undergo about 8 sessions.
