Hypnosis is gaining popularity throughout both the psychological and business worlds as a method of overcoming mental hurdles and solving a range of different personal issues. There are professional consultants and therapists who specialize in hypnosis, but gaining deeper insight into your own mind doesn’t have to be an expensive process.
Here are six steps that can help you put yourself into a hypnotic mindset:
1. Choose Your Goal
Hypnosis shouldn’t be a broad pursuit – it should be a focused attempt to solve a specific issue that you’re facing in your personal or professional life. Before getting started with the process, clearly identify what you want to work on in order to be able force your mind to temporarily forget about anything else you may have going on.
2. Go Somewhere Peaceful
The key of hypnosis is getting yourself at peace and relaxed. You’ll have a much harder time doing that in a busy environment, such as on the subway or in an energetic work setting. Most people prefer the solidarity of their own home, far removed from the hustle and bustle of normal life. An isolated office, one where you’re guaranteed privacy and quiet, can also work as well.
3. Vocalize Your Problem
Before immersing yourself in the hypnotic process, vocalize exactly which goal you’ve chosen for the session. It may seem silly at first – after all, your mind already knows what it is thinking, right? But taking the time to verbally identify your target problem allows your brain to better focus on that specific issue rather than the myriad of other ones you likely have running through your thoughts at any given time.
4. Close Your Eyes
Hypnotism is a subconscious process, one that uses our internal capabilities rather than visual observations. That’s why nearly any hypnotic instruction or advice will start with the command for you to close your eyes. Visual stimulation isn’t needed during hypnosis, and can serve to distract your mind away from the purpose of the process.
5. Steady Your Breathing
Now that you’re in a quiet environment with your eyes closed, you should be free from both auditory and visual distractions. In the peaceful confines of your home or office, you’re left alone with only private thoughts and mental processes. One of the best ways to further relax your mind is to focus on an internal activity like breathing. Concentrate on taking in deep, calming breaths and exhaling the spent carbon dioxide slowly and steadily.
6. Mentally Focus on Something Enjoyable
At this point your mind should be feeling very relaxed, almost in a sleep-like state but still very conscious. From here, turn your thoughts to something you enjoy doing, whether it’s playing a round of golf or hiking through solitary wooded trails. This serves to further remove any stress and worry from your mind and allows you to fall into a more subconscious state, one where your can address underlying issues undisturbed and without egocentric bias.
For many people, hypnosis is a frequently-conducted process that can serve to help them better themselves. It can also help overcome commonly faced issues ranging from quitting smoking to making important business decisions. By putting yourself in a hypnotic mindset, you’re better able to access your subconscious mind, one free from the constraints of our conscious perception of the world.
Business Tip
Unplug from your work. Take at least one day each week to completely unplug. Research shows we think more clearly and solve problems more effectively when we take time away from our work. It is also essential to manage stress and avoid burn out.
