When you are doing your best to succeed at work, it is easy to place less of a focus on your personal or home life. People are working more hours than ever, limiting the time that is left available for life outside of the office. With these increasing demands, it becomes harder for the brain to readjust to being home. You can find yourself thinking about work 24 hours a day. If you have found it a struggle to balance your life, then you should take a pause. Slow down for a minute and look at your daily routine. Find advice and suggestions to help you prioritize your time. To get you started, here are 6 tips for maintaining the perfect life balance. #1 – Set Priorities and Decide What is Most Important Hopefully, once you begin setting priorities, you will place your family at the top of the list. Work can come second, but you should make it your primary goal to ensure you are still spending time with your family every day. Whenever you have to make a decision that benefits one priority over another, you should start from the top of the list and work your way down. If an after-hours work meeting interferes with your child’s play, the play would come first. Your employer should value your hard work and they should be willing to allow you to spend time with your family. Simply reinforcing the fact that your family is the top priority can help you shift your focus and naturally begin to make decisions that place your family first and your work second. #2 – Stay Active and Exercise Regularly If you do not already include exercise in your schedule, you should start. Exercise is known to help increase your alertness and brain function. It gets your blood going and wakes you up. The increased oxygen intake helps clear your mind and improve your mental clarity. If you stay fit and include a consistent workout in your daily routine, you will not get drained so easily after a busy day at work. When you get home, you will still have the energy to engage with your family and enjoy their company. #3 – Cut Down on Activities and Drop Certain Chores You should also think about cutting down on the number of activities that you are involved in. If you volunteer at your kid’s school, limit your participation to one or two activities. You do not want to spread yourself out too thin. With too many tasks on your mind at any given moment, you will find it harder to concentrate and begin to lose focus. Along with cutting down on activities, you should drop certain chores or errands. Find ways to replace time-consuming chores or shorten the amount of time needed to complete them. For example, you could order certain groceries or items online that you buy frequently, so that you do not have to go out of your way to pick them up. #4 – Turn Off the Phones at Dinner You should sit down as a family and eat dinner together. If you do not have kids, you and your partner should still sit down and eat together. Make a habit of daily dinners. Everyone should sit, eat, and talk about their day. During dinner, everyone needs to turn off their cell phones and shut off their electronic devices. If eating in the living room, turn off the television and put on some music. This time together can go a long way towards balancing out your life. It can be so hard to find the time to sit together as a family. By choosing dinner, you have at least one hour every day that the entire family can spend time together and actually talk. #5 – Use Your Vacation Time A lot of employers allow employees to roll over their vacation and sick time year after year. You should make full use of your vacation time each year. If you get 2 weeks of vacation time per year, you should take 2, 1-week long vacations every single year. Plan your vacations around your family’s schedule. You could go on vacation during summer vacation or during winter break, when your children are off from school. #6 – Take a Nap When You Get Home If you find it hard to shut off your work brain once you get home, you should try taking a nap. Every day, as soon as you get home and say hello to everyone, lay down and take a fifteen to twenty-minute nap. This allows your brain to rest and decompress from a long day of work. Once you're awake, drink a glass of water and get ready for dinner. You should find yourself refreshed and ready to focus on your family. Use these tips to begin balancing your work and personal life. You should never allow your work to take over the rest of your life.
