Dark patches on your face are usually caused by sun damage or hormone fluctuations. In some cases, acne scars can also turn into dark spots, making your skin look uneven. The condition is called hyperpigmentation which is a result of excess production of melanin. Here are a few treatment options you can consider to decrease hyperpigmentation: Lightening creams Lightening creams are best for age spots or Melasma. They also work on patches of discoloration. While most of these are available over-the-counter, there are a few that are also available in prescription forms. You can try one of these and apply it once or twice a day to decrease your pigmentation. Over time it will lighten your skin. Face acids If you have mild hyperpigmentation you can try applying a face acid that will exfoliate your skin and shed the top layer. As the new skin cells begin to replace the old ones, it will even out your skin tone giving your face a smoother look. You can easily get many such face acids in drug stores and beauty stores. Make sure the acid content is not more than 10 percent. OTC Retinoids OTC retinoids are safe for almost all skin tones and work well for wrinkles apart from hyperpigmentation. Derived from vitamin A, they tend to penetrate deep into your skin, treating the layers just below the epidermis. If you find the OTC version to be weaker, you can buy Retinoids in prescription form too. Chemical peel Chemical peel is one of the hyperpigmentation treatments offered by dermatologists. The strength of the peel used will be decided by the dermatologist after an assessment of your skin. A very effective treatment, chemical peel can help you achieve quick results with regard to hyperpigmentation. However, it is important that you don’t expose your skin to the sun for at least a week after the treatment. If you have to go out, make sure you use a sunscreen with adequate UV protection. Laser peel skin resurfacing treatment This treatment reduces hyperpigmentation through the use of targeted beams of light. Both ablative as well as non-ablative lasers are used to treat hyperpigmentation. While ablative lasers work well for fair-skinned people, non-ablative lasers tend to darken the skin. Check with your dermatologist to see what works best for you. Microdermabrasion If you are fair-skinned and have superficial scars on your face, microdermabrasion may be a good way to achieve desired results. This procedure helps in removing the top layer of the skin through the use of tiny crystals. Apart from clearing pigmentation spots, this procedure also gives a gentle polish to your skin, making your face look smooth and radiant. Multiple sessions may be advised to achieve the desired results. Different treatments work for different skin types when it comes to reducing hyperpigmentation. But if you are looking for an easy and temporary method of hiding your pigmentation spots, you can try the airbrush makeup. You can also do one of the airbrush kursus if you want to become a professional in this. Hyperpigmentation is one of the most common skin conditions and therefore it has many treatment options. Nevertheless, it is always better to consult a dermatologist if you are looking at long-term results.
