San Diego, CA (August 7, 2006) – According to a survey of 600 sexually active women and men nationwide, 91 percent of women regularly choose not to have sex during their periods. Whether for fear of mess, embarrassment or discomfort, the women are potentially giving up five days on average of sex a month, totaling up to sixty days each year. Sixty days that, according to acclaimed sexologist Dr. Beverly Whipple, may be the best. nn“Most women and men don’t realize that sex during a woman’s period can be more enjoyable due to an increased level of blood in the capillaries surrounding her vagina,” Whipple said. “Some women have even reported an increased libido at this time, which may be caused by hormonal fluctuations.” nnThe survey, conducted by independent research company Market Research Inc. on behalf of Instead, Inc., manufacturer of the Instead® Softcup® feminine hygiene product, found that while about 50 percent of women have had sex at some time during their period, the majority abstain from it regularly due to issues of cleanliness and embarrassment, which were also cited by men. Whipple explains that these issues are moot given products like the Softcup, which can be worn during a woman’s period for clean and comfortable sex.nn“With modern advancements like Instead’s Softcup, women and men are no longer limited to 305 days of enjoyable sex,” Whipple said. “Not only does it give every woman the freedom of having sexual intercourse during her period, but it also removes any need to discuss her menstrual cycle with her partner.” nnAdditionally, a recent study of over 2,000 women from Yale University suggests sexual activity or frequent orgasm during a woman’s period can actually help stave off endometriosis. Other women surveyed by Instead also reported that sex can actually ease pain caused by menstrual cramps. nnAccording to Whipple, the 60 more days of lovemaking may help relieve stress in intimate relationships caused by time constraints. nn“I have heard so many couples cite lack of time as the reason they aren’t having sex,” Whipple said. “So why not give yourself every chance you can? Who can afford to lose a week outright?” nnThe Softcup has been bringing greater frequency and comfort to sex lives since its introduction in 1996. Available online at www.drugstore.com, and over-the-counter nationwide at Target, Walgreens, Wal-Mart, Fred Meyer, Kroger and other retailers, the Softcup offers women comfort, protection and freedom – both in and out of the bedroom – at an affordable price.nAbout Instead Inc.nInstead Inc. provides women with new and different choices for greater freedom and control of their reproductive and sexual health.
