Do you currently rent an apartment or home? Are you interested in doing so in the near future? If so, you want to avoid the 7 common mistakes of renters. This is important as you want to ensure that you never put yourself in a compromising situation. As long as you know what you are doing and continue down the right path of renting, you will never run into any issues along the way.
Here are 7 common mistakes of renters as well as some basic advice on how to avoid the issues from getting the best of you:
1. Not having renter's insurance. This is by far one of the biggest mistakes. Although you may think this is expensive, nothing could be further from the truth - it is actually quite affordable.
2. Not having a lease. Make sure you have a lease in place to protect yourself as well as the landlord. It is silly to continue living somewhere if you are not going to have a formal lease governing the rules of your occupancy.
3. Spending too much because you think you have to. There are many places to rent, some of which are going to better suit your budget than others. Make sure you consider all your options, allowing you to end up in a place that is right for your financial situation.
4. Not knowing what is included in your rent. Before you sign on the dotted line, you need to know what you are getting for your money. For example, which utilities - if any - are included? This is something you have to be aware of.
5. Not paying on time. You know when your rent is due. Make sure you send it to the appropriate party on time. This is important for many reasons. If you have a problem paying on time, let your landlord know. It is better to be upfront and honest than to run and hope for the best.
6. Thinking you can do what you want to the property. Since you don't own the property you need to get permission before making changes, such as painting the walls. Don't begin to treat somebody's home as your own. If you do, it could cost you a lot of money.
7. Forgetting to get your security deposit when you move on. As long as the property is in the same condition, you should receive your security deposit. This could be a lot of money, so make sure you don't forget to ask about it.
These are 7 common mistakes of renters. Can you think of any others? If you are going to rent, you should do whatever you can to avoid the trouble detailed above. It will make your entire living situation much more enjoyable.
Although these mistakes are common, most of them can be avoided with a little bit of knowledge.
If you have fallen prey to these 7 common mistakes of renters in the past, make sure you avoid doing so in the future.
