Anyone with kids can agree that their children are the most important and precious people in their lives. Every parent wants nothing but the best for their kids and they hope they strive to do great in everything they do. Kids are just like adults, they too can develop motivational brick walls that will stop them from completing what they have set out to do. Nowadays, due to the advent of video games, TV, and the Internet, getting our kids motivated is harder to do. These days it’s a struggle to get them to do their homework or even complete chores; and let’s forget about even asking them to put the video games down to go outside to get some fresh air! Listed below are 8 simple strategies to help get your child motivated: 1. When your child accomplishes something, praise them. Big or small, every time your kid does something good, let them know how proud you are of them. If they know how happy you get when they do something great, they will do it more to make you happy. 2. Don’t focus on negativity. Nobody, including you, is perfect. Everyone makes mistakes and dwelling on them solves nothing. You will get a better response from the child by focusing on what he does well rather than what he does badly. 3. Show off your child’s work. Regardless how small it may seem to you, showing off your kid’s good grades or report cards will motivate them to do better. Put up his good grades on the fridge or frame his report cards. All of these make them feel proud and they’ll strive to do better. 4. Boast and Brag. Call anyone and everyone who will listen and tell them all about your kid’s recent accomplishment. Once your kid notices how much time you take out of your day to make the calls telling everyone, it will boost their confidence and encourage them to try harder. 5. Rewards are great, use them. Every kid likes to get rewards just like adults! When your kid does something good, try giving them extra money, a special treat, or a special day out to the movies or somewhere they want to go. Regardless, whatever it is, the kid will try hard to get special treatment for his great accomplishments. • This way of motivation can be used for anything from a good grade to completing a chore that was not asked of them. Kids love getting special treats for jobs well-done. 6. Be sure to show interest in things your child enjoys. Kids change their interests a lot, sometimes daily! Part of being a good parent is keeping up with your kids likes and dislikes. 7. Talk daily with your child. You will never know why your kid likes what he does if you do not talk with him. Ask them how you can help with their activities. Listening and showing interest in them will motivate them to do better in everything they do because they know you care. 8. Don’t overdo it with giving them too many goals. It is only natural for us to want our kids to succeed in a lot but sometimes we can push them too much and even overwhelm them. After your kid does all there is to be done like homework and chores, let them just be kids! • All kids need “ME TIME”. This is time for them to do whatever they want as long as it is safe. This will keep them motivated in the more important things. All children are different in their own way and they all have their own goals in life. Sometimes in their life, their direction may be side tracked but that’s what we parents are there for – to make sure we get them on the right track to be the best that they can be. By following these tips it will make your job as a parent a lot easier!
