You are becoming a teacher giving classes or tutoring at home. Maybe that's why you have to decide what qualities are needed for that?
Whether it's a side job to make ends meet or your main activity, the profession of a home teacher cannot be improvised overnight.
According to one of the agencies, since 2005, more than 390,000 jobs have been created in the personal services sector. Among other services, the home support course occupies a prominent place.
So, here is our article on the qualities and skills expected of private teachers.
Listening to the Student
It is the main quality that predominates the teacher/student relationship.
How can you be legitimate in your resume, writing that you want to lead students to academic success if you aren't even able to listen to their needs?
During lessons at home, the student will indeed expect their teacher to direct the content of the class toward solving their academic problems and questions.
Consider the example of a third-year student who wants a school coaching program to prepare for getting a certain certificate or passing a test.
Or, what will parents think if private math lessons are not organized according to the official college math program? Will they have to buy argumentative essay if your guidelines aren't appropriate for good writings?
For example, the student says that they cannot assimilate the Pythagorean theorem. The teacher, in turn, prepares geometry exercises on the calculation of areas.
This example is extreme, but it illustrates the need to meet the expectations of a student in a tutoring program.
We often pretend to be listening because we hear the need of the other.
But it's not just about giving advice.
â Ignoring any judgments
â Listening without hurting
â Acting kindly
That's what you should pay attention to in the first place.
During an English tutoring course, for example, the teacher might think they are in the best position to understand the student's difficulties in conjugating irregular verbs, constructing a simple sentence, or translating a dialogue.
However, there can be a plurality of factors that make such an approach unsuccessful:
â Difficulties in overcoming personal problems
â Family tensions
â Lack of self-confidence, etc.
Of course, the English teacher is not a school psychologist.
But when students are faced with problematic schooling, just being aware of the problem — poor academic performance, poor grades, learning disabilities, etc. — is not sufficient to provide effective regular assistance.
It is about understanding the student as a whole, trying to get to know them as individuals to better address the difficulty they seek to overcome.
In our opinion, the teacher must be able to observe the work done, the behavior, or the non-verbal language: it is active listening to what the student has to say, to identify the causes of their maladjustment.
The quality of the teacher is not to demonstrate that they know everything but to give the student to play an opportunity in their education.
Have a Sense of Sharing
Passing on the knowledge to students to advance them requires having a certain number of essential skills.
First of all, it seems obvious that you must have solid skills in the subject you are going to teach.
We often remember that a teacher must have a thorough mastery of the discipline, to avoid the issue when " the student exceeds the teacher."
But beyond this aspect, the private teacher must have certain human qualities that will allow him to provide high-quality tutoring sessions.
The tutoring is a real moment of sharing between two individuals.
Whether the student is having academic difficulties or simply wants to increase his or her GPA, they called on you to acquire new knowledge.
Thus, loving to provide one with knowledge is a quality that is an integral part of the profession of a home teacher.
This generosity allows, first of all, to really enjoy helping a student in their progress.
It is indeed important to love what you do, simply because the learner always feels it.
Be Enthusiastic
Having a special teacher who shows enthusiasm when giving a lesson to a learner is essential for academia.
That effectively encourages long-lasting involvement because the enthusiasm is also based on communication.
â Your foolproof smile
â Your desire to teach
â Your true sense of sharing
That's what will make your students want to really get involved in your lessons.
The exercises that you will do, the homework that you will assign, and the knowledge that you will provide will in no way represent a burden for a learner.
By an obvious cause and effect relationship, the passion and generosity that you will put in your lessons will allow you to quickly increase the number of students and lessons given throughout the school year and even during holidays.
Isn't word of mouth the best way to make yourself known?
Adapt to All Forms of Tutoring
Patience is the most essential because we can find ourselves facing students who are suffering from academic difficulties, without no longer knowing how to revise their lessons and do their homework.
It is not always the case, of course. Still, the parents of students who have completely broken with the education system frequently call on a private teacher to restore the child's taste for learning.
Be Patient
In specific cases, being patient allows you to support your students better by taking the time to understand their shortcomings and blockages. Progress will not appear at the click of a finger.
Being impatient and want the notes of the student increase in the first month of the course of tutoring at home is far from the best attitude to adopt.
On the contrary, it is necessary to take the time to know your students better and become familiar with their personalities.
Be a Real Teacher
It will allow you to adapt your teaching approach to your temperament for truly long-term results.
In addition to the legendary patience, a teacher must demonstrate real pedagogy. It is also what will allow them to find students for their classes.
It is, indeed, an inherent quality of the home teaching profession.
Pedagogy is a specific word, which is often used incorrectly. It is, therefore, necessary to understand what it consists of.
Pedagogy is the art of teaching by providing the desire to learn. It is, therefore, giving love of learning to the students.
Start with the Style of Dress
You aren't told to dress in a suit, but it is important to have a good presentation of yourself. Someone who shows a neglected look sends the message that they aren't good teachers.
The day of the first lesson with a new student, put on pants or jeans and the shirt (ironed), and be dynamic.
With your body straight (but not tense), be sure to make a very frank handshake, accompanied by a smile when the parents or the student open the door to their home.
If you come with a distorted, worn, or stained T-shirt and pants that are also stained or washed out, that will not appeal to your interlocutor.
Be Punctual
Arriving late for a private lesson, you risk disappointing the parents of a student.
Prefer to manage your time reasonably before going to the student's home, even if it means arriving early and waiting in the car or on the street.
For example, if it usually takes 20 minutes by car to go to your destination — plan to double this time by leaving 40 minutes earlier.
In the end, by having these qualities, you will be rigorous, serious, and competent teachers in the eyes of the student's parents.
