This article is second in a series of recession proof business articles. Many people will very quickly understand the idea of what a saturated market is all about, and is something you will definitely want to avoid. A good example of a saturated market is when I was involved in a MLM and sold nutritional supplements. I was extremely excited and positive about the product and the company, and thought this was my ticket to success and found the ideal recession proof business. When I approached people to try this great nutritional supplement and went through my sales pitch, people would say “oh, is that like so and so company’s supplements.” I would of course go through my pitch about how different my company’s supplements were from that other company’s supplements, and what made them so much better, and what all the benefits were if they were to take my company’s supplements rather than what they were currently taking. I spent all my time trying to convince them to use my company’s supplements. This is what happens when you are dealing with a product that has already reached market saturation with a lot of established competition. It is a good idea when you look at home based business or internet marketing business to research your own niche. Determine how many people are already providing a solution for that problem or you will not find a recession proof business. The easier way and more recession proof way of doing this would be to simply provide a unique solution to a unique problem. Remember that all products are solutions to problems. Prior to my MLM experience I worked at an outdoor adventure school in Japan. During the winter we were like the other places and opened up our lodge for people to come to the village and stay there for the weekend. They could go skiing or snowboarding during the day and come back for the evening. All around the village people had similar business models. A few families would show up on the weekends and lodges would entertain them. We decided to try something different. We decided to offer an all night ski program where people could come and enjoy the back of our property, it was really a giant snowboarding park, and something interesting started to happen. When other lodges were only getting two or three cars a night we were getting two or three bus loads each night. Our business changed from being poor to profitable overnight. Because we were providing a very unique solution people we not looking for just a place to stay for the weekend but for the total experience. Because we provided a unique solution to a unique problem we become very profitable. This is the idea that is going to be very beneficial to your business whether it is in a recession or during a strong economy. In order to engage in a recession proof business you have to provide a unique solution to a unique problem.
