Previously known as Madras, Chennai is one of the best vacation destinations in India. It is regarded as the safest city in India for tourists. Chennai is famous for its pristine beaches, towering buildings, beautiful parks and lip-smacking local cuisine. If you are worried about finding quality accommodations in Chennai, there are many budget hotels in Chennai where you can stay within your limited budget. There is a lot to explore in and around Chennai. If you are planning a weekend getaway from Chennai, there are many picturesque places nearby Chennai which is worth your time. Other than common getaway destinations like Mahabalipuram, Ooty, and Kodaikanal, there are many places to visit near Chennai. I have come up with a list of 9 less known weekend getaways from Chennai. I hope that this is will be useful in planning your travel itinerary. 1. Pulicat Set at 54 km from Chennai, Pulicat is a beautiful seaside town in Sriharikota. This is the best place to plan a picnic with your family and friends. The main attractions in Pulicat are Pulicat Lake (second largest salt-water lagoon in India), Pulicat Bird Sanctuary, Dutch Fort, Dutch Cemetery, and Church. Pulicat is the perfect destination for history geeks and nature lovers. 2. Nagalapuram Nagalapuram is a small hamlet located in the state of Andhra Pradesh. It is one of the best trekking spots around Chennai. The breathtaking waterfalls, lush jungles, and fabulous weather captivate every tripper. Other than trekking, another must-try activity is Camping. The places of interest in Nagalapuram are Nagalapuram Waterfalls and Sri Veda Narayana Perumal Temple. 3. Horsley Hills Nestled at an altitude of 41000 feet, Horsley Hills is a tranquil offbeat destination in Andhra Pradesh. With towering peaks, balmy climate and luxuriant verdure, it is a paradise for nature enthusiasts. The famous tourist spots in Horsley Hills are Malamma Temple and Kaundinya Wildlife Sanctuary. You can also indulge yourself in activities like birdwatching, jungle safaris, zorbing, and water rappelling. 4. Tharangambadi Formerly known as Tranquebar, Tharangambadi is a small fishing village in Tamil Nadu. It is one of the less known weekend getaway destinations near Chennai but is the perfect place to spend the weekend with your special ones. The main attractions in Tharangambadi are Town Gate, Tharangambadi Beach, Rehling’s House, Fort Dansborg, and Masilamani Nathar Temple. If you are planning for a laid-back holiday destination, then Tharagambadi is the best place for you. 5. Tada Falls Also known as Ubbalamadugu Falls, Tada Falls is a beautiful waterfall located at Varadaiah Palayam in Chittoor. It is a paradise for every adventure seekers and nature enthusiast. It is one of the best spots near Chennai for a family outing. It is frequented by bird-watchers and trekkers for its lush and picturesque jungle. The ideal time to visit Tada Falls is September to February. 6. Gingee Fort Commonly known as Chenji Fort, Gingee Fort is the oldest fort in Tamil Nadu. Situated in the Villupuram district, it was known as the Troy of the East. The main attractions in the Gingee Fort are the seven-story Kalyana Mahal, Prison Cells, Granaries, Aanaikulam Pond, and the Chenjiamman Temple. It is frequented by foreign tourists to know more about the Tamil culture. 7. Alamparai Fort Alamparai Fort is one of the less popular historic places on the outskirts of Chennai. It was built in the late 17th century by the Mughals. It stretches for an area of 15 acres. You can enjoy a spectacular view of backwaters from the east side of the fort. The main attractions in Chandragiri are Chandragiri Fort, Museum, Temples, and Beaches. It is known for its popular Chandragiri Fort constructed in the 11th century.
