An addiction is an uncontrollably strong longing for things—an abnormal quirky obsession for something. Medical studies and findings have disclosed that each person has actually a compulsion to some extent. We call someone an addict if that person is addicted. Individuals who have an inexplicable obsession or pining for anything are truly addicted. Medically, the term addiction is defined as a “physiological and psychological dependence on a substance or practice.” Addiction is actually a hydra-headed theory having different aspects. Medical researches have also divulged some other forms and types of addiction besides drugs, alcohol and nicotine. Generally, there are two forms of addiction according to the medical community.

First there is the obsession in the physical sense or physical dependence and psychological addiction. Pseudo-addiction is the second type. Individuals that are obsessed in consumption of food are highly engrossed or preoccupied with overeating and may be considered food addicts. Sometimes, these persons are mockingly dubbed as “food alcoholic.” Physical dependence. A type of obsession in which the addict becomes dependent physically on intoxicating drugs or substance. People suffering from being addicted to alcohol are dipsomaniac. Individuals that are dependent on smoking or tobacco are considered nicotine addicts. Another form of addiction is narcissism. An extreme state or condition of being addicted resulting from drug abuse is drug addiction.

It literally means addicted to particular drugs. Drug abuse is a practice commonly used where hard drugs are abused. Examples of these are, amphetamines, cocaine, methamphetamine, opiates, (codeine, heroin and morphine) and laxatives—drugs that are obtained from narcotics. There is actually a debate over the issue that substances that are freely sold like nicotine and alcohol shall be designated and classified as hard drugs, as both are connected with high mortality rates. Psychological addiction. This term literally means getting addicted psychologically to particular practices or things. There are times that people are highly fixated or obsessed with practices such as computer, food, sex, work, gambling, pornography, spending, shopping etc.

Therefore, as ridiculous as it may sound, these people in fact do actually suffer from addictions to the practices they are highly fixated with as mentioned above. A state of or condition that a patient manifests a drug-seeking behavior or characteristic similar to psychological addiction is pseudo-addiction; however, the patient feels other symptoms alternatively, real pain in such cases. As soon as the pain has subsided, normal behavior is resumed. The physical dependence on a substance such as alcohol, nicotine and drug addiction can unfortunately oftentimes have gravely deadly results. Being an addict is an illness, but it can still be treated.

Moreover, being addicted in whatever type or form is a warning signal of an abnormality, which requires immediate treatment. There are several rehabilitation centers or help centers that aid in providing treatment for addicts all around the world. Standard treatment for drug addicts may include medication therapy, behavioral therapy, or a combination of both. People experiencing any signs and symptoms of being addicted should go and look forward for proper and immediate treatment before their condition becomes rapidly advanced.
