Can vitamins purify water? That’s what some people say. In “But Not a Drop to Drink! The Lifesaving Guide to Good Water”, Steve Coffel said a balanced diet containing foods rich in vitamins A, C, and E may prevent the buildup of toxic substances in the body due to contaminated water.
Vitamin C, in particular, may slow down the development of cancer-causing nitrosamines and similar toxic compounds in the stomach. Vitamin E, calcium, iron, and phosphorous, on the other hand, may reduce the effects of lead.
Consult a reliable nutritionist regarding this matter and avoid megadoses for they can harm - rather than help - your body. If you must take additional vitamins, take them from food not pills.
Because of the pollution scare, many people are turning to bottled water as a substitute for ordinary tap water. What first started as a fad is now a billion dollar industry. The International Bottled Water Association (IBWA), the trade association of the bottled water industry based in Virginia, said many households in the United States consume bottled water.
The annual consumption of bottled water has increased from 345 million gallons to over 1.6 billion gallons. There are hundreds of bottling plants in the United States producing more than 600 different brands of bottled water.
"Bottled water is becoming more and more a necessity in the world because the water that comes from our faucets is becoming more and more difficult to control to the level that it is safe to drink. Water purifiers used in many homes may be of some help but it is not enough to remove all impurities and dissolved minerals which can harm the body,” according to Allan Pyle, president of Steelhead Industries, a company that designs and manufactures water purification equipment for the bottled water industry in many parts of the world.
“As the population grows and the water demand gets higher and higher, the plants that process the stream waters cannot grow as fast as the population does. Therefore, you run into a situation where the water quality starts to degrade and it gets worse to the point where it doesn't make sense to try and process all the water that goes into our homes to drinking standards. This is because about 95 to 98 percent of it is used to wash the driveway or flush toilets. Only a few percent is actually used for drinking. So it is better to drink water that has been very well treated and purified such as bottled water," Pyle added. (Next: Types of bottled water.)
