Learning to drive; your first kiss; high school prom and saying your wedding vows. These are all milestones in life that most of us never forget. And as positive as all these experiences are, there are some things that can have just as big an effect on us that we’ll never forget. Perhaps you remember the birth of all your children, the purchase of your first home and so on. One experience that can be equally touching to some is reaching your goal weight. For those that have a lot of weight to lose and have been struggling with their weight for years, finally reaching that ideal weight can move you to tears. It can also be a special moment that you never forget. Although many embark on the journey to lose weight and get in shape, unfortunately few reach that milestone of getting the weight off. nnSome find that discouraging because if immediate results aren’t seen, it can be easy to give up. Those that struggle to lose weight often find themselves on the yo-yo dieting train where they are constantly losing and regaining the same 20 pounds. But there is hope and inspiration for those that have struggled with weight for so long. Humans are said to be creatures of habit, so an effective way to lose weight is to create new habits within your lifestyle. Creating the habit of counting calories, watching what you eat and exercising regularly will get you where you want to be health wise and keep you there. nnOne source of inspiration you can look to that will help with developing new habits is the reality weight loss TV show the Biggest Loser. This show selects contestants from around the country that have a strong desire and need to lose large amounts of weight. The contestants on Biggest Loser are divided into teams and each team is given a personal trainer to work out with. The teams face challenges and brutal workouts while secluded on the Biggest Loser ranch. Contestants not only workout for up to eight hours per day, they are also taught essential lessons about food and portion control. Biggest Loser operates under the principle of calories in versus calories out. Everyone that participates on the show has their caloric intake monitored as well as how many calories they are burning with workouts. There are weekly weigh-ins and those that lose the least amount of weight are in danger of being eliminated. nnAlthough Biggest Loser offers a $250,000 grand prize to the contestant that loses the highest percentage of body weight, the show’s focus is getting people healthy. A show like this can serve as a great motivation for others that are struggling with their weight. Participating in a reality show to lose weight might not be your speed, but pulling the tips and good habits from the show is a great way to get you started. n
