Codependency can often cause individuals to lose themselves in their relationships. They ignore their own feelings, needs and problems. Instead, they choose to obsess over the person that they "love." They are obsessed with the other person's feelings and needs. Although you would think that this would create a nice and loving relationship, it actually has the opposite affect. These relationships become stressful, depressing and full of resentment.

Most people tend to gravitate towards these types of relationships because they learn it at a young age and usually due to a dysfunctional family. When parents bring chaos into the family, they create an environment in which the children feel abandoned and are forced to fend for themselves. They have to care for their younger siblings and everyone is forced to survive. These children learn that their feelings no longer matter and this translates into poor relationships.

Codependents are usually very nice people and they do have a conce
for others. However, they find themselves in relationships where they feel they can help or "fix" the other person. This is not necessarily for the good of that person, but to fulfill their desire to take care of other people.

Individuals who are codependent lose themselves in others and in order to regain their sense of self-worth, they need to learn self-care techniques. It is important that they realize that taking care of yourself is not selfish, but necessary. Many people need to be convinced of this. If you are codependent there are several things you can do for yourself, take a warm bath in the evenings to unwind, get a massage, practice yoga or mediation and even journal when you have a moment. This will help you to learn to take care of yourself and to fulfill your own desires.

If you believe you or someone you know is suffering from a codependent relationship then counseling is the best treatment.
