A tiny pink pimple somewhere on your face can give you a lot of hang- ups. Much more so if you are very meticulous about your appearance. But what more if it’s cystic acne? The term itself can make you squirm because it does sound alarming. True, most people think that pimples are inconsequential. But perhaps not cystic acne. Cystic acne is a chronic skin inflammation causing bumps or cysts on the face. It is more prevalent in males ages 20 and above. Once oil glands are blocked, they become cysts or nodules. These cysts or nodules can burst open anytime, become inflamed and the surrounding tissues can become filled with pus.
The lesions from cystic acne can cause long term or permanent scarring. Cystic acne is a deeply rooted infection that may take a long time to heal as the infection waste cannot find an outlet and therefore cannot be eliminated. It may seem unfair for a common skin disease such as acne to cause significant damage to the quality of your life. But in the case of cystic acne, it is possible as the scars that they leave can be so visibly and horribly noticeable and can dampen your self-esteem, not to mention that they can become permanent. Is it fair for a mere acne to interfere with the quality of your life? Definitely not! So the first thing to consider is to go to your dermatologist once you have an outbreak of cystic acne.
They say beauty is skin deep, and I say literally it is, so be extra careful and don’t tamper with your skin on your own once you have cystic acne. Seek medical and professional advice from a credible dermatologist for treatment. There are several cystic acne treatment methods, but not all of them may be feasible or suitable for you. Dermatologists generally agree on the three-step acne combating kit for cystic acne. In most cases, it is effective and almost always doesn’t have adverse side effects or hazards. The 2.5 Benzoyl Peroxide kit seem to be ideal for this skin disease.
There is also Isotretinoin which is orally taken once or twice a day for four to five months. Isotretinoin is recommended for severe nodular acne and cystic acne. It can make you steer clear of acne forever, too. Intralesional corticosteroid therapy is also one possible treatment for cystic acne. It is actually painless although each pimple is injected with a diluted cortisone solution. Fast relief from the inflammation is usually induced by the injections. Another option is acne surgery which involves manual removal of blackheads and whiteheads. As with any sort of medications and medical procedures, these acne treatments should be discussed thoroughly with your dermatologist to ensure its efficacy and safety.
Most of the time, acne is neglected as it may seem trivial. But it may be time to see a dermatologist if: 1. your acne has become large and painful; 2. you have persistent acne scars; 3. your complexion becomes darker as cystic acne can cause the skin to have dark patches; 4. your acne gives you stress and personal dissatisfaction; and 5. over-the-counter acne remedies don’t work for you. Various methods of acne treatment are available nowadays so it is not necessary for you to agonize from painful lesions, deep scars and low self-esteem because of cystic acne.
