I do not believe it is possible to be perfectly organized. Our lives are in constant modes of change. Some changes come fast. Some changes creep in slowly over time. What works today may not work tomorrow. What works for one person, may not work for another.

Birth is the beginning. Death is the inevitable outcome. Everything in the middle is a series of changes. We change by aging. We change by growing. We change through the people and environments around us. We change through celebrations and through tragedies we have endured.

When you look around your home or office and see the clutter and chaos that brought you to finding this article, in many cases it is a reflection of the changes you are going through or have gone through. I often hear people say, “I haven’t had time to get organized because…” or “This wasn’t a problem until…” and you can insert some life change in the blank. Marriage, birth, promotion, move, decreased health or sudden disability, loss of job or loved one. Some people tell me that they were just born unorganized. Maybe instead they just never learned how to be organized in the first place or always had other things that took higher priority.

Let go of all of the excuses. Let go of all of the blame. Let go of all of the guilt. That was yesterday. Today we can all strive to be better and start making improvements. Tomorrow we can again do the same. Remember, we are always changing.

Being organized is not just putting this here and that there. Being organized is about changing your perceptions and learning to see things differently. It is about learning when to be flexible, when to be constant, and when to make the flexible constant and vice versa. It is about learning how to tame the mundane everyday functionality in order to free your self for opportunities and brace yourself for the unexpected. It is about learning to bring creativity to the ordinary.
