Many don't know how much money they can possibly save simply by building their own solar panels and wind turbines and not only that but it can be a very rewarding experience that you may never have thought of. For those that don't know solar panels are a weatherproof box with a clear top that goes right over the electrically connected solar cells which collect all the solar energy.

All the material that you will need to build a solar power system can be bought at your local home improvement store. For those that are a little more inventive, they can find the items really for pennies. After all they're aren't any 'rocket science' - hard-to-find materials, below is my list of what I have used to create a working solar power system right in my own backyard.

Here are some of the basic things you'll need to build solar panels: UV proof Plexiglas, plywood for the backing and some normal boards or thick plywood for the framing. Don't use non UV proof it will reduce the effectiveness of your panels and not only but lose its color over the time. Apart from these you'll need a proper manual that will teach you step-by-step how to put the solar panels together.

Some of these materials are pretty easy to find for free, try going to a garage sale or if you're a bit lucky you might have a friend that might not need them anymore. The inside part of your panel will have solar cells, solder and stabber wire which I bet anyone can easily find at their local stores, I've got all my parts for a little less than two hundred dollars, just imagine how a little investment could save you thousands each year.

You'll also need a proper soldering iron or gun that heats up fast, they're quite affordable in most of the stores. For those that don't yet the solar cells are what makes solar panels generate electricity and they're half of your investment for each solar panel you make. They're quite easy to find in your local solar part shops (might want to try online), they're a lot cheaper. However you might be able to get these for pennies from someone that doesn't need them anymore.
