When children reach the age of one, they begin to be more aware of their feelings and emotions. They know that they want things but when they know they’re not in control your toddler would start throwing temper tantrums. They want to be in control and what better way to let their mommy know that they’re mad but by throwing a temper tantrum. They have feelings and emotions but they just can’t speak and express these emotions yet. Once your child hits his toddler stage there’s too much development going on. Just understand that this is normal and natural to the development of your child.

I know someone who has a 19-month-old toddler having a temper tantrum. Anyway, she once told me that her child Donny started having tantrums when he saw a bottle of Children’s Motrin. Little Donny wanted it so much but his mom didn’t want to give it to him and I can’t blame her. Donny saw it while he was in the bathtub and even went as far as trying to drown himself. Mommy took him out and he threw himself to the floor, crying, kicking and shouting. How in the world can my friend supposed to keep her sanity when her most of the time sweet, innocent and calm baby is acting like that? Although my friend went to make him breakfast, the toddler got angry and threw it all over the floor, still having the similar tantrum from that bottle of medicine.

Therefore, my friend began to look for things on the Internet. Sadly, she did not find much on how to deal with temper tantrums in 1 year olds. However, she found bunch of advices on the Web and some expert advice on tantrums in preschoolers and 2 year olds. Therefore, she relayed to me a summary of what she collected on how to cope with temper tantrums on toddlers. Comforting the toddler while they’re having a tantrum can in fact worsen the child’s temper tantrum. They are already testing you and they’re angry. When your toddler is acting like this, it is best to ignore them if they’re not getting their way.

Don’t give into the situation or you won’t be consistent. Consistency is one of the things you should learn to do while your kid is still young to discipline them effectively. Your reaction is what they want from you. It might make you feel bad that they feel upset with you, but it would be for the best in the long run. Distraction is an effective and excellent technique to use when dealing or coping with a child having tantrums. But the problem with this method is, it needs to be done when they already start having tantrums. If you have to wait until the outburst is already occurring, nothing will help most likely.

Always keep a close eye on your misbehaving child. For example, if they use objects or things to throw and throw himself down, be sure there is nothing around him during their tantrums that could harm them.
