A poll conducted by the American Podiatric Medical Association revealed that a surprising 73% of people polled revealed that they are dealing with foot pain. Why are more patients complaining of foot pain in the examination room? Most patients have issues with their feet because of: the kind of footwear they use, the activities they engage in, or how their feet are formed. Usage of uncomfortable shoes can turn minor problems into major ones. Athletes are another group who are often affected by foot ailments. Factors such as poor support can all be contributing factors to lower extremity pain. Mom and dad can also be the cause of foot-related problems, because genetics play a role how the foot was formed in the womb. This can enhance the risk of developing painful foot conditions such as bunions, heel spurs, and plantar fasciits.

Foot Biomechanics: The Evils of Over-pronation and Over-supinatio

Flat feet can cause abnormal rotation of the feet when walking or running. The foot handles bearing the weight of the body and providing balance and stability. The portions of the foot that help to keep the foot in harmony with the body include the arch, heel, tarsals and meta-tarsals staggering. The arch provides tremendous strength and flexibility so the foot remains stable. This harmony can be disrupted by high arches or fallen arches, which can cause the foot to rotate oddly. In high arches, the body’s weight is oddly emphasized on the far ridge of the foot (oversupination). On the other hand, over-pronation ensues with fallen arches because the weight of the body is concentrated on the inside of the foot, causing the ankles to roll inward .

Over-pronatio
Can Lead to Serious Foot ProblemsnA quick test to see if fallen arches or high arches are a problem is to go to a place where a foot print can be made, such as on cement. Dip one foot in cool water and then stand normally for a few seconds. Then, pick the foot up and look at the impression that remains. A flat foot with over-pronation will leave a full foot imprint where all of the skin of the foot has made contact with the ground. A high arch will leave just a sliver of the ball of the foot’s, outside portion, and the foot’s heel. Either of these arch dysfunctions can contribute to bony growths in the heel or treatment for flat feet because the foot has to deal with repeated and excessive pressure where it isn’t supposed to.

Persons with pain caused by fallen arches, heel spurs, or who need plantar fasciitis therapy can get relief for their pain if they use orthotics. They give the needed support to stabilize the areas in the arch that have been weakened. They also give cushioning in areas where repeated and excessive there is excess pressure on the foot in the heel and ball areas. Orthotics are available in an array of sizes and types and are designed to keep up with anyone’s activity level.
