The difference between an optimist and a pessimist? An optimist laughs to forget, but a pessimist forgets to laugh. - Tom Bodett
When was the last time you laughed? I mean laughed so hard that your ab workout was done for the day? If you’re thinking it’s been decades, it’s time to take out your scrunchie and let down your hair.
There’s no doubt that parenting is a huge responsibility and being a mom can be all consuming. But that doesn’t mean that you have to take the role so seriously. Having kids is a great excuse for you to be silly again, explore your inner child and get down right dirty. If you feel comically challenged, here are some ways to lighten up.
Find your inner funny- Everyone is funny in some way. Are you a great storyteller? Do you tell a killer knock knock joke? Do you dance like Elaine from Seinfeld? Whatever it is about you that makes other’s laugh, keep it up. Take ownership on your unique ability to entertain your family.
Laugh for the health of it- It’s been proven time and time again that laughter really is the best medicine. It boosts your immune system and keeps your spirits high. So in order to get your daily dose of drollness, rent a comedy, surround yourself with fun, positive people or just try to find the humour in your life.
Smile the stress away- Being a mom is a stressful job. But don’t let it get you down. Stress is linked to many major illnesses and can make you miss the funny moments in life. So the next time you unknowingly leave the house wearing your slippers, or your child draws on the walls with crayon (like my son Jack did), calmly discipline him if it’s in order and get psyched. You now have a funny story to tell!
Encourage your children’s sense of humour. Whether you gave birth to a ham or a wallflower, help your children let loose. Teach them to focus on the fun part of a challenge not on doing it perfectly. And if your daughter wants to wear her princess costume to school, dust off your tiara and wear it when you drive her. When your kids see you having fun and enjoying the lighter side of life, they’ll learn how to laugh at themselves and positively deal with the hard times that are inevitably heading their way.
Action Challenge
Find something that instantly puts you in a good mood. It could be a quote, a favorite song, or a picture of your kids. Whatever it is, keep it close by. The next time you feel like you’re about to fly off the handle, refer to whatever it is that makes you smile. It’s time to find the funny and bring back the joy of motherhood.
