Self-esteem is much more than pride in oneself or self-respect. It is much more than how much a person likes, accepts, and respects himself overall as a person. Self-esteem is about confidence. Our confidence in our own ability to think and to cope with the basic challenges of life. It is our confidence and certainty that it is our inherent right to be happy and successful, to be worthy and deserving. It is the belief that we are entitled to declare our needs and desires, achieve our goals and enjoy the products of our efforts.
A person with high self-esteem:
∑ Knows that he or she is worthy of happiness and trusts his or her own mind and judgment.
∑ Is more likely to persevere during times of difficulty.
∑ Respects others and requires that he or she be respected.
∑ Feels confident, focused and present.
A person with low self-esteem:
∑ Goes through the life without giving it their best.
∑ Accepts abuse, exploitation and degradation from others.
∑ Is motivated primarily by fear.
∑ Finds ways to self-sabotage.
Having self-esteem and self-confidence in oneself is essential for being happy and fulfilled in relationships. Your self-esteem, whether it be high or low, tends to generate self-fulfilling prophecies. What you think about and how you feel is what you bring about in your life experiences.
Is there such thing as having too much self-esteem?
NO!!!
It is not possible to have too much self-esteem just as it is not possible to have too much health. Having high self-esteem is not the same thing as being arrogant, a braggart, or conceited. Such characteristics reflect a lack of self-esteem rather than a healthy self-esteem. Contrary to popular opinion, people with low self-esteem are always very sure of themselves.
People who have high self-esteem are not driven to make themselves superior to others. Their value is not measured against others. They simply like being the person they are. A person with low self-esteem is often threatened by and uncomfortable with those who have high self-esteem. When people with low self-esteem declare a person has “too much” self-esteem they are really making a statement about their own lack of self-esteem. Those who are unhappy often resent those who are happy.
How can I improve my self-esteem?
You can begin by accepting that you are certainly not alone. Many people have this problem.
Your self-image began to evolve at an early and was pretty well established by the time you reached the age of 8.
By then you had already received literally thousands upon thousands of negative messages: 'You’re not good enough, 'No you can't', 'Who do you think you are?' 'You'll never make anything of yourself', “You’re not smart enough”, and so on. Most of these were customary reprimands casually given by adults; but they affect a child deeply and profoundly. The accumulated effect of these frequent dictates can be devastating. Few young people reach adulthood without having their confidences marred in some way and develop the “limiting beliefs”, or the ‘writings on their wall’, that serve as the lens from which they see themselves, others and the world they live in.
Once you understand your “limiting beliefs” you can permanently unravel the ties that prevented you from being your greatest self, doing what set out to do or having what you want in life.
The first step is to determine what internal thoughts prevent us from accepting and loving ourselves just as we are. These internal running commentaries, this ‘inner critic’, obstruct us from feeling that we deserve a good, healthy and happy life with wonderful relationships, economic well-being and professional satisfaction. Once we have a clear understanding of these core beliefs, feelings and emotions we can use a variety of emotional healing techniques such as EFT {Emotional Freedom Technique] and TAT [Tapas Acupressure Technique] to diminish, if not completely eliminate, these thoughts from your internal programming – relatively easily and effortlessly.
Taking deliberate control of your thoughts and emotions will have a huge impact on your self-esteem, confidence and other areas of your life.
