The term Anaemia is generally used to describe a multitude of blood conditions which affects the concentration of the red blood pigments haemoglobin. Haemoglobin is needed for the transportation of oxygen to body tissue, low concentrations of haemoglobin cause exhaustion and weakness. There are many causes of Anaemia such as genetic disorders, lack of bone marrow red blood cells due bone marrow disease, loss of blood through bowel tumour, heavy periods or peptic ulceration and serious diseases such as sickle cell anaemia, iron deficiency anaemia, and pernicious anaemia.

Iron deficiency is generally caused by severe blood loss, malnutrition, infections and by excessive use of drugs and chemicals. Deficiency of dietary iron may cause nutritional-anaemia, lowered resistance to disease, a general run down condition, pale complexion, shortness of breath on manual exertion, and loss of interest in sex.

Good nutrition can help with Anaemia, if your Anaemia is caused by an iron deficiency, then including foods which have high iron content such as shellfish, sardines, red meats, wholemeal bread, green vegetables, wheat germ, egg yolk and dried fruit. Red meat has an easier form of iron to absorb than vegetables, it is also important not to overcook your vegetables. It is best to avoid tea and coffee consumption as these affect iron absorption. To increase haemoglobin concentrations eat beetroot and drink beetroot juice.

The most common type of anaemia is iron-deficiency anaemia. Excessive blood loss, whether acutely hemorrhage or chronically through low-volume loss, is the cause of iron deficiency. Our body takes a long time to replenish severe loss of iron in blood. Women during their menstruating years are prone to anaemia. People who have experienced in any form of major blood loss, such as accident or child birth, may get anaemia too.

Anaemia is not a disease in itself. It is not only due to iron or vitamin deficiency. It may also be due to a chronic illness, or a genetic or acquired disease (such as thalassaemia or sickle cell disease). It may also be a side effect of a medication, such as anti-biotic medications or anti-coagulants.

Intake of fresh and green vegetables ensures a sure relief from the problem of anaemia, and it is in any way preferred more than medicines. Amongst fruits, apple is recommended after each meal for its rich iron content. Figs and citrus fruits like lemons, oranges etc are very helpful when eaten in large quantity. Black grapes, strawberries, onions, carrots, tomatoes, plums and raisins are very effective in healing anaemia.

Iron is generally absorbed from the whole of the gastro intestinal tract but most of it comes from the upper part of the small intestine mainly the duodenum. Dietary Iron is absorbed through the mucosal cells in ferrous form. Iron in diet is present in ferric state which is reduced to ferrous during absorption, with the help of Vitamin C, glutathione and amino acid –SH groups.
