Four in every 100 people have lazy eye or amblyopia. At birth, the infant usually learns to use their eyes together once they are opened. Seeing is a learned skill and it may not be an easy one because nobody is born with the ability to use the eyes together to focus. The fact is, infants are usually farsighted at birth and cannot focus on objects that are up close. Development of sight requires sufficient light stimulation. Otherwise, the normal neurological processes cannot take place. Early stimulation is essential for the eyes for normal development of retinal cells and for impulse transmission to the brain.
Lazy eye is a vision loss that occurs when one of the eyes does not do its function for an extended length of time. A lazy eye usually has loss of vision because the brain hampers it. The lazy eye or amblyopic eye is the weaker or unused eye. Eventually, as the lazy eye does not perform its function, sight is lost. Both muscles of the eyes should work together to focus. This is normally the case for those with healthy vision. There is a muscle imbalance in lazy eye that causes the brain to reject the image from the weaker eye that eventually leads to vision loss of that weaker eye.
If a child has strabismus, chronic farsightedness or nearsightedness in just one eye and is left untreated, lazy eye may never be corrected. It is essential that lazy eye be detected and treated early in very young children. But if done otherwise – early diagnosis and preventive measures are done- lazy eye can be treated or normalized. For adults with lazy eye, LASIK eye surgery can sometimes be resorted to. The thing is, however, that LASIK eye surgery can only improve vision but it cannot alter the brain’s incapacity to see. The LASIK procedure cannot do anything about the transmission of images to the brain from the retinal cells.
LASIK eye surgery cannot correct the erratic neurological connections that was acquired during infancy because of inadequate light stimulation. The LASIK procedure can only ensure that the image in the eyes is correctly positioned on the retina by reducing astigmatism, nearsightedness or farsightedness. This is just a probability as LASIK eye surgery cannot completely guarantee a better or healthy eye sight. For adults with lazy eye planning to undergo LASIK eye surgery for correction, it is wise to honestly and openly talk to your eye surgeon before you decide to actualize your plan. Expect a straightforward answer from your eye surgeon whether or not LASIK eye surgery is suitable and effective for you and your eyes.
Consider even a second and third opinion regarding this matter- to find out if LASIK eye surgery is valid for correction of lazy eye. Be wary because the medical field is also a business and anybody can be an easy prey to profit from. Be certain that you find a trustworthy eye surgeon who foremostly has your well-being and welfare in mind.
