Is the person that you see in the mirror really who you are? Perhaps it is that you have been adopting a false front to hide your true self. Or it can be the case that you do not really know yourself deep down inside. You often see yourself through the lenses of others. You believe what they say, feel and believe about you. You are so identified with this persona, that you are unable to determine if the description quite fits who you are.
At the very root of who you are is your soul. All that you are comes from your consciousness in the Being. Your soul has been through lifetimes. At the soul level, you store past life memories. Each stored memory gets tagged emotional reactions. The imprints are stronger with each repeat of the same pattern over lifetimes. They explain some of your unconscious behavior, habits and hangups today.
Hence, to discover who you are, you need to look within. What you probably have identified yourself as are things you have acquired in the present life. It may be your house, the material possessions that you own, your academic qualifications and so on. It is about the Doing. Who you are is about your Being. Who others say you are may not necessarily be true either since they may not know who you are at soul level.
For a start, you may find it hard to look into yourself. It may mean that you have to look into your fears. You are unable to forgive yourself for your past mistakes as well. You also fear that by expressing your true self, others may reject you. At the very root, you have a conce
that you are not good enough.
Rejection by others can be difficult to bear. You may be conce
ed that when others know you are not as strong as you appear, they may no longer like you. You do not welcome the idea of exposing your weaknesses. However, what is worst of all, is the rejection of self. If you are not able to practice self forgiveness, you will find it hard to love yourself completely. To love yourself is also to embrace all that you are without reproach but with grace and acceptance.
What you can come to realize through a process of self discovery is the beauty of your essence. You come to know that you are not identified by the what-is. What remains is largely the Presence of your Being, formless, unconditioned and ete
al. You become less attached to the impermanence of material things. You are less identified with the stream of thoughts that are not really you. You are Spirit in a physical form.
Who your true self is can only be discovered from within. It is not what you have or think, or what others say about you. The only way to lead an authentic life is to know yourself at core. When you are authentic, you will be amazed by how life becomes smoother. Your family and friends will also be naturally attracted to the true essence of your Being.
