A website, regardless of price or effort, can be critical to the success of an individual or a company.

If you have some understanding of the basics or are prepared to learn a little, then Web design templates offer an economical solution by providing a design with a professional appearance for a bargain price. Once the decision to do it yourself has been made, selecting the perfect template is critical.

To identify what sort of template you need/want you first need to identify a number of factors; probably the most critical being the purpose of the Website and your knowledge level.

Designing a website for either personal or business use can take a substantial toll on your time and your wallet if you go about it the wrong way. We've all heard the disaster stories, but it really needn't be that way. There are some terrific templates out there. Problem is that with many of them you need additional software to make them work, and you really do need to understand at least some basic HTML and FTP. The other problem is that building a pretty website and uploading it is only a quarter of the battle. With so many competing sites, unless you also understand a little about keywords and optimisation then all that time, effort and money will almost certainly be wasted.

Before you begin to choose a website template, or have a designer design your site, it will be useful to consider and actually list some of the following:nn - the purpose of the future website : firstly is it a personal site or business site? nn- what type of content will it contain?

There are many reasons to design a website. Individuals may create a website to keep in touch with friends, post family pictures, new baby or wedding photos or pictures of their travels. Small business owners might create a site to begin an online business from scratch or they may want to expand their current business by getting additional customers through the internet or it may simply be a better way of providing information on their business or service.

So the sub-questions here will include:nn - do you want a Gallery of photos or productsn - do you need a shopping cart for multiple products or just a simple order button for single itemsn - do you want a membership site or do you have information which needs to be secured by a password and having your customers login?
- what 'personality' or 'tone' do you want to project for your site (do you need 'Flash', bold colours, etc. or do you need a basic HTML site, or would a Wordpress platform suit your purposes better?)
- do you have an existing logo or image that needs to be incorporatedn - what target market do you want to reachn - will the site need frequent updating: your web design templates will need to be simple to update and upload.
- navigation: a crucial aspect of website success is the ability for visitors to easily navigate the website. It is important to consider the depth or number of pages, background and foreground colors, size and location of links.
- loading times: sizing and number of graphics to ensure fast loading should also be considered.

While web design templates are intended to simplify the process of creating a new website, there is still a prerequisite of computer and internet knowledge required. Some templates also need some knowledge of programming or coding to get the best results. Select your template carefully.
