Remember the movie, No Way Out, with Kevin Costner and Gene Hackman? Costner plays a Navy officer who falls in love with the mistress of the Secretary of Defense played by Gene Hackman. When she turns up dead, Costner heads up the team to find her killer. He is in a multi-story government building in Washington D.C. with one team chasing her killer (him) and another team chasing a Soviet mole (him again). With every one chasing him and all the exits blocked, there appears to be NO WAY OUT! Ahhh, but isn’t that the best part of any good movie? We sit on the edge of our seats watching the hero get trapped. “How is he going to get out of this one,” we ask. It looks like no way out but the nature of a hero is that they always find a way out.

I am sure you have been in your own 3-D movie (financial burdens, a debilitating relationship, an unwanted lawsuit, maybe a job you wanted to leave) where there appears to be no way out. So you are familiar with the uncomfortable feelings of anxiety, panic and terror. As long as you lock your focus into the appearance of “no way out”, you will be trapped. But it is not true. Spirit always provides an exit.

This awareness came to me recently from a life situation that fell into my lap unexpectedly that appeared to have the power to devastate me. I wrestled with attacking thoughts that kept arising for a few tormenting days and sleepless nights. Then one morning I awoke to the thought, “There is no such thing as “no way out”. Spirit always provides an exit.” The word always was emphasized. I recognized Truth when I heard it. The attacking thoughts ceased. I relaxed. I waited for the exit to appear. Sure enough before the end of the day, ideas began to flow to me that before were blocked by my feelings of anxiety, panic and terror. As soon as my focus shifted to the idea of an exit door, it began to open. As quickly as it had disappeared, my joy returned. I was confident a solution was possible.

Spirit ALWAYS provides an exit. Know it. Expect it. Be patient as you wait for the exit door to show up to free you from your own attacking thoughts. It is certainly true that, “Things are not always as they seem”. There is an exit door somewhere. Sometimes you have to cling to patience and faith and wait for it to show up. n
