Let’s face it, very few of us take enough time for ourselves. The repercussions of not investing the energy and time to take care of our ourselves will eventually manifest itself as illness or stress. We carry the effects of stress not only in our hearts but also in in our bodies. Yoga is here to help.

The use of yoga to improve overall wellbeing dates back to ancient eastern civilizations. Yoga was used to ward off and cure illness and restore the balance that is fundamental to our joyous existence. Luckily, this art form has been passed on through the ages from Eastern society to the Western civilizations of today!

Yoga is much more than just stretching and twisting your body into seemingly impossible positions. Yoga is about strengthening the core muscle groups that support us each day of our lives. Yoga aligns the body and spine and counteracts any sublaxations that can result in serious pain or illness. As yogic exercise is performed, muscles, tendons, ligaments and joints all benefit from the stretching and lengthening effects.

n

There are also numerous health benefits that can result from a regular yoga practice. These include lower blood pressure, better digestion, increased heart health, improved cholesterol and triglycerides levels as well as better dexterity. Your immune system will receive a tremendous boost and you will be much better equipped to ward off common irritating illnesses like colds and flu. Yoga can also help you lose weight and build lean muscle mass which will not only make you feel better, but look better as well! Who doesn’t want that?

Many people begin taking yoga as a way to get themselves in shape. They often find that their body functions better on a day to day basis and as an added bonus they experience clarity of mind. They feel more in tune with themselves and more able to handle the chaos of everyday life. Yogic breathing is an essential part of proper yoga techniques. This breathing relaxes the body, calms the thoughts and will give you back your natural ability to focus. Yoga can be thought of us as a form of mediation that can redirect you toward your inner purpose and help you find fulfillment.

n

Probably one of the best things about yoga, is you don’t have to be able to run a marathon to do it. Your yoga conditioning will get better and better over time. Each time you take a class or follow along with a video, you will be improving and increasing your ability to add more postures to your program. Done properly, it does not put undue stress on the body and you never have to worry about performance. There is no competition or judgment with yoga. Quite simply, yoga is about you, your body and your health.

n

If you really take a look at all the things you do each day of your life for other people, you will soon realize that now is the time for you. All of us can afford to find 20 minutes in our day to concentrate on ourselves. The benefits that you receive will not only improve your health and wellbeing but will put you on the road to a happier and more positive you.
