A national epidemic is hitting department stores in which scores of thick winter jackets and snowflake sweaters are disappearing from the shelves, only to be replaced by skin-baring swimsuits and bikinis. Yep…swimsuit season is fast approaching, and you know what that means—no more hiding behind that fleece or bunchy turtleneck.

Although it happens every year—and the seasonal warming for us living in the snow-laden north of the United States is a welcome sight—the mere thought of having to climb into a swimsuit is enough to stop many of us mid-bite through a self-indulged dessert.

Part of the swimsuit realization might not hit us until the day of that summer barbecue and swim party. And the worst part is, while there’s plenty of us that love to relax poolside, the embarrassment we feel over the look of our own bodies is enough to keep us “boarded up” inside our homes.

First things first: you should never feel ashamed about what you look like. Each one of us is different, and so are each of our bodies. But there’s also no reason to hide when some simple weight loss steps can be taken to lose the fat that’s bogging you down. When it comes down to it, the way we feel about ourselves can tie-in to our own mental and physical wellbeing.

So, one of the first tricks to a diet program is getting started. I know some of us we’ll say “I’ll start next Monday,” or “I’ll start next month.” Well, the odds of that date coming and going, along with a perfectly executed excuse, is more than likely. And the worse part about the swimsuit season coming is that when it’s already here, there’s only more fuel to throw on the I’ll-start-next-week FIRE!

After all, if you expect to make dramatic changes in yourself, then the sooner you start the better. Heck, your goals might even have time to expand from losing five pounds, to losing 10 pounds or even more.

Some of the best advice I can give is to start your weight loss or diet program today. It doesn’t matter if it’s the last Tuesday of the year, or the supposedly unlucky Friday the thirteenth, the only way you’ll begin shedding pounds and trimming inches around your waistline is if you get up and decide you’re going to do something today.
