Last Fall, my husband David and I took down the terra cotta bird house that hung from our back porch so that we could build a new porch. I inadvertently touched the little bird structure, and feared the scent of human hands would preclude our ever hearing the sweet, impossibly high music of baby Finches again - music that had seemed miraculous three years ago when we heard it for the first time. But it seems we're expecting! That in itself feels wondrous, but when I think of the backstory, it becomes infinitely more rich. Three years ago, we kissed our beloved Bassett Hound, Belle, for the last time. We lifted her into her favorite papazan chair on the porch to commit one of the greatest and most agonizing acts of love, euthanasia. After many months of radiation for cancer, a wonderful remission, Belle’s cancer had returned, and we invited a veterinarian to free her to romp at the Rainbow Bridge. We caressed her pussy willow ears one final time and said goodbye. The porch felt empty and lifeless. Until we heard a joyous peeping coming from the birdhouse. We didn't realize a momma bird had built a nest until we saw her entering the earthen structure with worms, and heard the babies zealous cries. It felt like the truest affirmation of life after a terribly dark time. The birds continued to nest yearly, but we thought we'd blown it for this year -- until Saturday, when we spied a Finch entering the house with twigs and grass. Washing it thoroughly with soap and water must have done the trick. And I like to think Belle's spirit had something to do with the birds' return...
