Massage therapy is a great skill to have because it enables you to help people deal with stress which is one of the most prevalent and destructive things acting upon us every day. High stress levels can be the underlying cause of such things as pain, sleeplessness, anxiety, high blood pressure, headaches, low energy, irritability, poor concentration, loss of appetite, skin conditions and more. It makes sense then that forms of remedial massage are probably the most useful skills a person can have, making the undertaking of a massage course a great way to begin your journey into a very worthwhile profession or just a hobby you can use to help your family and friends.

To get started with your massage course there is very little expense, over and above the cost to learn massage, other than the purchase of a sturdy massage table and some oils. If you can set up a massage table at home and find a family member or friend to be your practice person you are ready to get started.

Make sure the massage course that has initiated your desire to learn massage is one that will give you the best possible skills and allow you to advance into the area of treating pain if your interest develops, without having to completely retrain with different techniques.

Try to get as many different people as possible to come over to practice your massage therapy in the early stages. Adults and children, male and female, so you can see and feel the differences from one body to the next. This will help provide you with a good grounding and make sure your massage course trains you to the level you expect.

If you decide to learn massage make sure the massage course you choose arms you with good evaluation skills because once you feel comfortable in this area you will be able to pass on some useful advice as you are giving your massage. There will be many differences in the strength and health of the bodies you’ll work on and your massage course should explain these properly as part of the training. It will take you some time before you are in a position to confidently make any assessments for people on what you feel and obviously the more variety of bodies you work on the faster that will happen.

You should also keep in mind that a basic massage course doesn’t replace the level of expertise a professionally trained person would have. If you feel a bit out of your depth with a certain body you work on, the best advice I can give would be to refer them to a fully trained and accredited SLM therapist where possible.

Don’t try to do too many people too quickly in the early stages so you don’t overwork your hands and wrists before you get the chance to build up the strength in them. For the first few months at least I would suggest you don’t do more than 7 massages a week maximum, an average of one per day, but not all on the same person.

Enjoy your decision to learn massage and cherish the closeness it will bring to your relationships.
