How do I motivate myself to achieve my goals? The answer to this question is incredibly simple. You motivate yourself by being clear on your reasons why you want to achieve your goals.
Most people simply want things and don't take time to dig into their reasons why they want them. In most cases this is why the vast majority of people fail to achieve their goals and give up.
If you have big goals that really stretch and challenge you, then your "Why" is the thing that will help motivate you to get through the tough times. It even helps you get the mundane stuff done when you'd rather be doing something else.
For many people, their "why" involves their partner and their children, however in most cases that is simply not enough. You have to get deeper into the reasons why you want to do it. It can be that you want to see your children grow up, or that you want them to have a different life to your own. Ultimately, there needs to be something of yourself in your reason why. It's such a difficult concept to convey because it's so personal.
Sometimes people discover their Why in difficult circumstances - for example, finding the will to beat cancer or losing a lot of weight because their health is really at risk. It's important in these situations to get clear on why you want to continue to be healthy beyond your recovery or once you have lost weight. A good place to start is to consider all the reasons you want to be alive and then keep them with you for the rest of your life.
In a previous business, before I became a Life Coach, my mentors frequently quoted this expressio
"When the Why is clear, the How is easy." It took a long time for me to define a strong enough Why and really understand this.
Now I'm struck daily by my commitment to my goals and I know it's to do with the strength of my reasons why I do what I do.
Getting clear on your reasons why you are doing something is so often over-looked and when things aren't going well, most people will quit, or compromise on their dreams. They will make justifications and excuses, but ultimately they have not achieved something they said they really wanted.
The process involves some deep thinking and soul-searching, but the results are worth every second you invest in uncovering and defining your Why.
