Dubbed as the “Sport of Kings”, surfing is no doubt the most well-known and enjoyable surface water sports activity. It basically consists of riding a surfboard on ocean waves which are rolling to the shore. Offhand, it seems like to become a sport activity that's not easy to learn. That might be correct, but just to an extent. Once you know the basics of surfing, you'll undoubtedly enjoy the sport. If you are interested to know surfing, there are a few basics regarding the sport activity that you have to take note of: Equipment The market is flooded with plenty of surf products, from armbands and nose protectors to helmets. You can get some of them if you have money to spare, but as a newbie, you do not require more than just a surfboard. You have to buy a surfboard that is not only of a good quality, but also of the perfect style and dimensions that will meet your requirements. Safety Each sport comes with its own dangers. Surfing, as an extreme sport, comes with many. In fact professional surfers have had their share of injuries while in the water, so it is then important for a newbie to know to value the ocean. If you still don't have advanced swimming skills, don't go very far away nor tackle huge waves because there is always the risk of drowning. Don't be shy to learn how to balance on small waves. Styles You will find many surfing styles, most of which you can discover later, when you are able to learn how to read the water and keep better balance while on a surfboard. But the following are a few basic skills you have to grasp as a beginner. Paddling - This can help you stay on the water longer. Paddling is a skill that you have to learn just in case you will be stuck in turbulent waters. Duck Diving - It is the skill of gracefully diving under an oncoming wave. If you don't learn how to duck dive, there's a danger of you being washed away by a strong wave. Wave Breaking - The rule of wave breaking is if a wave breaks to the right, you go in the same direction. If the wave breaks left, you will also go left. Otherwise, you'll risk colliding with an oncoming wave. Trying to keep all these points in mind will not only help you surf much better, but also surf more secure. A very useful suggestion for newbies though is that you obtain used surfboards since you are just knowing the best way to surf.
