Business plan consultants and business plan writers are similar terms. Many people stay confused between the two till they can afford. When you have a business planning requirement, there is no other option than to know the difference. Depending on your requirement, you may need just one of them. Your choice will make a difference to your plan as well as to your budget. When Do I Need a Writer? When you have the required expertise to devise your own strategy, you do not really need a business plan consultant. You would need a team of professionals who have an experience in devising strategies. They must be capable of extracting and collating relevant information from the data bank. Market research may be outsourced as it is a tedious and complicated job. If you have the ability to formulate the plan, all you need is a writer who can put across your point in the right business language. The plan should not look ambiguous, confusing, or verbose. A writer possesses the skill to write a plan crisply, without missing on the essential details. When Do I Need a Business Plan Consultant? A consultant is the right choice if you’re still a novice at planning. If you have clarity on the business idea and how you want to go ahead with it, but do not have an understanding of market dynamics and how things work in the corporate world, a hired consultant will guide you through. Services of a business plan consultant include conducting market research, creating strategies, projecting financial requirement, suggesting best funding resources, estimating revenues and profits, drafting the plan document, and giving feedback. According to the services provided, there is a difference in the kind of money charged by business plan writers and consultants. A consultant’s job requires much more effort than a writer's job. Therefore, consultants charge a higher amount. In both cases, whether you hire a consultant or a writer, there are certain things that demand your attention. There are three important parts of all business plans that you should review carefully. If possible, write them yourself. Or, if you are not good with words, you may give a draft to the writer and he will improve on the language. The three parts to look out for are as follows. Executive Summary: This is the first thing in your business plan document; first thing your investors will read. Keep it short and crisp. Marketing Goals: You must know what is your target audience and what do you want your strategies to achieve. If you have a team, discuss with them and start by setting out high, but achievable, targets. Competitive Analysis: Knowing competition, and knowing it well, is the first step to planning. You can analyze competitor’s strategies along with your business plan consultant. But before you do that, you should have your competitors on your tips. Assess what you already know and what you need help with. It is in your best interest to make a wise decision. It will save you either a lot of effort or a lot of money.
