A Closer Look At The ABC’s Of Web Development

This ABC list is designed to assist those who are completely unfamiliar with the web development process to gain some inside knowledge about some of the programs, languages and other systems that workers frequently use. For more information about the areas you are most interested in, do not hesitate to do your own research:

• AJAX: This stands for “Asynchronous JavaScript and XML” and is the name given to the technology that helps us to create many of the web applications in circulation.
• Browser: This is the program that allows us to view the websites we have so lovingly crafted through the web development process. Modern browsers, however, are able to perform many other tasks.
• CSS: This stands for “Cascading Style Sheets” and is the name given to a language that is used for defining how a web page is displayed; in other words, its presentation.
• Firebug: This is the name given to a tool (a Firefox extension to be exact) that is useful for letting you edit and monitor every aspect of a page during the web development process.
• Grid: These are the visual frameworks upon which our websites are actually structured. Each of the various languages will have components that only work in the grid format.
• HTML: This stands for “HyperText Markup Language” and is the name given to the most common language used in web development today. Its latest version brings a number of features for streamlining our workflow.
• JavaScript: This is the name given to the scripting language that is used to define the behavior of a website. Everyone who works in development uses it in a number of areas.
• PHP: This is the name given to the most popular server side language in the industry and it is estimated that PHP currently powers millions or even billions of web pages and applications.
• Query: This can actually refer to a number of different things, such as a language (which interfaces with external systems to obtain information) and a strong (which is chunks of information passed as a part of the URL).
• XSS: This stands for “Cross-site scripting” and is used for ensuring the security of a web application. It is used for protecting vulnerable websites from hackers looking to obtain sensitive information.

Whilst this list does not comprise the entire alphabet, it does provide those who are new to web development with some information that gives them a basis on where to go next.
