Have you ever wondered exactly how many people are working on your website at any given time? Whilst it’s likely that you have outsourced all of your web development work to a company that is a little more capable of the tech side of things, it can be interesting to learn exactly how much work goes into the creation and upkeep of a website. There are a number of different areas that require employees (such as design, development, marketing, SEO, social media and so on), but choosing the right amount of employees often proves to be the most difficult aspect.

  • The complexity of the website
This point could also be titled ‘the level of technical expertise required for the creation of the website’, but that seemed a little long. A number of different technologies can be used in the web development, some of these fairly basic and others fairly complex. Those websites that are more on the basic side will not require that many employees (for both the creation of the site and its maintenance), whilst those that are a little more complex will need the extra help. An ecommerce website (one that deals with money and other transactions) will require even more manpower.
  • Website activity
The amount of activity that a website receives (or is set to receive) can also play a role in how many employees are needed. Busy websites that receive a lot of traffic every day will require a larger web development team to keep it maintained – they will need to deal with feedback, customer problems and other maintenance issues. A quiet website, on the other hand, will only require a smaller development team.
  • Size
Finally, the size of the website will also play a role in how many employees are needed for its creation and ongoing maintenance. A website is measured by its total number of web pages; the bigger the site is, the more people will be required to keep it going. Some websites (especially ecommerce ones) may have thousands of pages with very little content; the size of these sites should be determined based on the number of hours needed by the web development team to keep it in tiptop running order.

Whilst there are a number of different areas of web development that require employees, ensuring that you have enough people to create the website in the designated time and to maintain it can prove to be a little more difficult. By taking the above points into account for the websites that your company is responsible for you, can ensure that you have plenty of employees to cover the ever-changing workload.
