Cancer is one of the most dangerous diseases ever discovered. It is not contagious but may be genetic in nature. Therefore, it is vital to visit breast cancer specialists for breast cancer treatment in Pune, or elsewhere and undergo treatment on time. Cancer specialists, to treat breast cancer, make use of radiation therapy, commonly known as Radiotherapy. In this article, we are going to understand in detail about it. What is Radiotherapy? Radiation therapy is a breast cancer treatment procedure. In it, high-energy rays are used to destroy cancer cells that remain in the affected region of the breast after the surgery. Moreover, radiotherapy also helps to prevent a recurrence. What are the types of Radiotherapy? There are mainly two types of radiation therapies provided to the affected individual. External Beam Breast Cancer Radiation- It involves the usage of massive machines for directing high-energy rays. In this process, x-ray beams are projected in the affected breast of the patient for two to three minutes continuously to destroy the cells. This process lasts for five to six weeks with multiple appointments in a week. rnInternal Breast Cancer Radiation- In this process, the radioactive liquid is injected with the help of catheter, needle, or wire in the affected region. This process involves newer technologies, and it causes the least side-effects. Brachytherapy- Brachytherapy is another type of Internal Breast Cancer Radiation Therapy. It is performed with the help of an implantable device. In it, doctors place a device in the affected region close to the part where the tumour initially emerged. This process may require only one-time surgery depending upon the severity of the case. What are the benefits of Radiotherapy? Radiotherapy is a boon to all the patients suffering from this deadly disease. Some of the key benefits of this method are: ● It avoids cancer recurrence. Often breast cancer returns if the tumour is not completely operated. Or, if there are still some extracts remaining that could not be removed by the surgery. To avoid this, radiation therapy is performed on the patients to eradicate the carcinogenic cells. ● It restricts the tumour from spreading in the nearby healthy tissues. Hence, protecting healthy tissues. ● Radiotherapy involves multiple sessions which may last up to a few minutes only. One may not need to get hospitalized. This enables all the individuals to manage their regular activities along with the treatment schedule. What are the side effects of Radiotherapy? Every coin has two sides. Similarly, along with many benefits, this medical innovation also has a few side effects- ● It can cause sickness, energy loss, and tiredness. It can also have ill-effects like diarrhoea (loose motions). ● It may cause skin reactions like itching, redness, irritation in the affected region. ● The colouration of the breast may change and may experience bruising as well. ● Changes in the body-weight can also be observed. Another side effect that you can experience is the fluid-filled in the armpits, back or chest, in turn making it bulky. Conclusion All the side effects that Radiotherapy may cause can be managed, as your doctor would provide you with proper guidance and medication. For instance, patients experience fatigue but staying active is the key to a faster metabolism and quicker healing. Exercises like Yoga are prescribed to patients. Wearing loose clothes is also recommended to avoid skin rashes. Nothing is impossible to achieve. With these precautions and knowledge about the pros and cons of Radiotherapy, one can heal and be healthy. Radiotherapy has both pros and cons, but it is a miracle for the ones who are striving hard to win over this disease.
