If you are ever out camping and you are happy and cozy next to a warm fire with a belly full of great food you aren’t going to be concerned with your survival. However, if it rains three feet in the middle of the night and your gear is swept away in a flash flood and all you’re left with is a backpack a little supplies you will be concerned about your survival. In a case like this you need to have a few fundamental ideas for how to start a fire. rnOne. If you have any batteries you can connect some types of metallic material like tin foil, small wires and steel wool to the terminals and create a spark that can ignite a fire. Before you do anything with the wire you need to be sure to collect very fine wood and flammable material that can catch the spark. Using batteries to create a spark is a great way that an individual with some basic equipment can start a fire. rnSecond. If you have a magnify glass, flash light reflector, binoculars you can start a fire in the same manner that you would if you were going to roast ants in the driveway. Find a clear opening in the ground so you can get full sun onto the glass. Focus the light through the glass to make as fine a point as possible on the ground. You can even focus the light on your own hand to feel the intensity. You’ll need to gather fine wood material that is dry. This material should be placed in the exact spot that your light is most intense. When you see smoke beginning to raise out of the wood you can begin to blow very softly to stoke a flame. rnStarting a fire with either one of the two ways explained above does take some patience and practice. It is recommended to anyone that is going camping to learn some basic survival skills course. Studying and practicing survival skills is not only a great use of your time, but it could potential save your life. Knowing how to produce a shelter, fire and food can literally save your life if you are an avid camper. If you’re a once a year kind of camper then I’d recommend staying in designated camping areas. Staying in a designated campground will lessen the chance of unforeseen disaster and if something does happen your chances of being found and surviving are drastically greater. rnIf you are choosing to not stay in a designated camp ground and you plan on backpacking then it is critical that you ensure your safety with basic survival skills such as making a fire. Having the right training and the right equipment can mean the difference between a cold night in the dark vs. a warm night by the fire. Fires are known to bring comfort and relief to individuals that have become stranded or lost. A fire also gives you a chance to ward of any predators and unwanted visitors in the night. Not to mention a fire with smoke is perhaps the greatest way for you to get found if you do become stranded and lost. Be sure to look for RV sales and RV Rental sites.
