A formal French Dinner, The first night in Paris, Charlotte is invited to Dinner with Professor Myer’s family.

Dinner turned out to be a formal affair. The long highly polished table with intricate walnut inlays was capable of seating twelve or fourteen, it was now beautifully laid out for six. After the blessing Rebecca appeared with the first course. Turning to Charlotte Simone very quietly confided.
“It is only since they are twelve that they can join their parents for dinner, before then it was just for the Shabbat on Friday nights that they were allowed to eat with their parents. Professor Myers is very strict in some ways, his parents were very orthodox Jews, living in East Poland. He was lucky when war broke out in 37 that he was a student here in Paris so he managed to escape the attentions of Hitler’s Schutzstaffel or SS. His whole family, two brothers, one sister and their parents all died in the gas chambers of Auschwitz.” Charlotte could see that Professor Myers was listening as his face took on a somber look. The first course finished, she served quails and vegetables to everyone, leaving the large tureens of vegetables on the table.
Charlotte noticed the two girls eagerly watching her and waiting for her to start to squirm.
But they were out of luck too many experiences with her aunt Maud had taught her how to control her reaction to the heat in her bottom.
“You may use your fingers if you like, Charlotte, only way to get all the flesh off these small birds.” Professor Myers observed, then continuing.
“Simone says you are studying History at Oxford, what period are you researching?”
“The eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, sir.”
“Interesting, I am currently at the period just before the outbreak of the Revolution with my students; and please call me Didier in my home, I have got used to that name, my real name is Dmytro, but I changed that during the war for obvious reasons. I have now got quite used to Didier.” He smiled.
“I could let you sit in on my lectures if you like, but I would ask for a quid per quo.” After demolishing the first of his three quails he looked up.
“I have seen that the same historical events are viewed and documented in different ways, not only by the various historians in one country, but especially what is taught in another country can vary enormously. So my barter is that you present from time to time your taught facts and views. I believe that both of us could find it interesting, and it will be especially relevant for my students who must learn to multi source information and not rely simply on the text books that we provide and use. What do you think?” He bent over his second quail pulling it dexterously apart.
“Yes. I agree. It is an unexpected and welcome addition to my own studies.
“Tell me, the fall of the Bastille on the 14^th July 1789, was that the beginning of the French Revolution?”
“Most of my text books say that was the beginning, but I believe it must have started before.”
“Good. Very good. Your text books are wrong, you are correct in your surmise. Seventy days before on the 5^th of May actually; and unlike what the crowd expected there were only seven prisoners inside.” Charlotte responded with enthusiasm.
“Yes, one thing is very clear from for example my reading of the time of the English Raj in India. British historians mainly reported on the Raj and its questionable ethics from the point of view of the consequences observed by and on the English minority, ignoring the far bigger impact on the Indians living in that sub-continent. To get any view that begins to approach the reality of that turbulent period of history, one must find and read scripts from both side.” Didier nodded his head vigorously, once his mouth was clear of quail, he added.
“I can see we will have some interesting exchanges; you are right historians, I suppose understandably, always want to make their own country look good to the detriment of the facts.” They continued their animated discussion through the cheeses and then on into the dessert, which was as Charlotte knew well was the French order of eating.
“Papa!” Antoinette piped up.
“Oui. Ma Belle.”
“I think you should continue this interesting discussion tomorrow; Charlotte must be tired after all her travelling today.” Charlotte recognised that Antoinette was thinking of her unfinished business with her body as if in the best lesbian books or lesbian fiction books maybe even a lesbian love stories.
