It is not difficult to undertake when you planning for a custom built wine cellar. Ideal storage condition for wine are simple – humidity should be less than 70 percent, the temperature should be constant 52-57 degrees Fahrenheit, and the wines should be undisturbed and these should be horizontally placed. The bottles must be stored in a dark environment. In this article, I am going to present you the tips on constructing a wine cellar.
The basic element for constructing a wine room is the environment in which your wines can be protected and safe while they mature. You need a cold room, a renovation of the room and a dedicated room when you are constructing a wine cellar. You must isolate the interior of your wine cellar from exterior conditions to maintain the environment. When you are trying to create the perfect place for your wines you need a proper environment such as the undisturbed area that is free from odors and vibration, ideal humidity around 60 to 70 percent, perfect temperature of 12C that means 55 F. These are the ideal set of parameters to plan wine cellar construction. With this perfect set of parameters, your wine will mature elegantly on a smooth path to perfection.
Check the guidelines and build the cellar.
- Insulation:
The thicker the walls, the better the insulation factor when building the cellar. The perfect cellar can maintain a consistent temperature. It requires insulation and vapours barrier. To the hot side of the cellar’s ceiling and walls, you can apply plastic sheeting. Apply the vapor barrier from within the cellar when the plastic sheeting is impossible to apply. The insulation can be placed easily and for this, you should wrap the ceilings, walls and the entire cellar.
In cellar construction, you can normally use foam and fiberglass insulation. All the ceilings and walls should be insulated and this is very important to build wine cellar racks. This way, it will be not affected by the outside elements and this will ensure that the temperature will remain constant. Before applying the finish flooring apply a sealer in the floor. This will stop the moisture.

- Floor, ceiling, and wall covering:
You need to know what type of finishing material you should use. It is a matter of budget and taste. It also has an impact on the interior of the room. The ceilings and walls are frequently enclosed with drywall and then plastered or decorated. It is recommended that waterproof drywall is the best option for added protection if you want drywall. To the walls, you can apply redwood, cedar, and other woods. Make sure that that the material has to be same for the ceilings and walls covering as it can provide a standard look to the cellar. For wall covering material, you can use ceramic tiles, granite, and stone.
Ceramic, stone, marble, and slate are the most attractive options for flooring when you are thinking to design wine cellar construction. Never use carpet. This will decay from the moist and cold environment of a cellar. You can also use wood flooring. Apart from this, there are new products on the market.
- Lighting and doors:
Lighting and doors are the two more elements that can have an effect on the environment of a cellar. The cellar will not maintain its proper temperature or humidity levels without the weather seal. Therefore, you need to build a cooling unit. This is the most widespread trouble. Make sure the glass is double pane and tempered.
For the décor, lighting becomes a very important part. Make sure the lighting is air locked. To make an enjoyable atmosphere, use sufficient lighting. Don’t leave the light on for long periods. When you leave the cellar, make sure that the lights are off. To avoid leaving the lights on by accident, install a timer light.
- Cooling systems:
To make a cellar, environmental cooling systems are required. To control humidity and temperature in a wine cellar, there are two types of units in the cooling systems. You don’t need any cooling system if you can rely on the ground temperature to cool the wine. The cooling unit will be required if the temperature is not constant or between 52 to 58 degrees.
Bottom Line:
Brick, cement, glass, and stone are poor insulators. To prohibit the moisturizer and keep its ideal humidity and temperature, you can use the coating of foam o a sheet of plastic. You must also have a vapor barrier. You must have a cellar door and it should be sealed. You may have shortening lifespan when you have poorly sealed doors.
