Someone asked me, “How do you define happiness?” my reply was simple, just add and subtract.
In life, questions are met with easy answers. Complications are what made it difficult to handle. Take for example a man named Johans, during the day he wakes up at around four o’clock in the morning and prepares his own breakfast, eats alone and then readies himself for a dayshift duty as a security guard in a client company of the agency where he is employed. For the entire eight hour duration of his duty, he simply sits and has keen eyes on the incoming people on the building. He never leaves his post unless called upon by the President. After work he goes home and commutes, cook for dinner, watch TV for a while and then went to sleep to be equipped for another day that he dreaded anticipating. His life is most common and boring, and the question, is he happy?
I know 95% of respondent would say that he is not. The remaining 5% sees beyond the story and the answer is yes. If you’ll ask me on my preposition to Johan’s life at first I would have the same answer with the 95% respondent and say “no he is not happy”, but after reflecting and contemplating my own life I begun to realize that I basically have the same life as Johan’s has. It may be in different situation and circumstances but I have to admit I have the same routinely things everyday, but yes I’m happy.
Happiness is a feeling within your soul. It emanates your deeds and the way you see things. Johan’s life was boring… yes… his life was no exciting at all… correct… he will never enjoy good things… wrong.
Why do people judge a person’s happiness through his wealth, achievements, social acquaintances, job description and so on and so forth… A common view of almost everyone including me.
Let’s re told Johan’s story in an in depth perspective. He wakes at around four in the morning; boils water for coffee and cooks breakfast. He makes two pack lunches for his meal in the afternoon, one for him and the other one for someone he loves. Yes he has a love life. He commutes in the same jeep every morning and arrive on duty before employees logs in building. He checks the surrounding before sitting at the entrance of the mall the whole morning and ensures everything’s secure. At a particular office, he leaves the packed lunch he prepared along with an inspiring note to brighten someone before she starts her day. At eight o’clock in the morning when employees are logging in their time he checks on someone and her smile inspired him for the rest of the day. Every twelve noon during his break the head of the company calls him over to have their lunch together. And this is the most exciting hour of the day that he anxiously waited every day. No one knew of their relationship except them. He sneaks at the back door and proceeded behind the lobby towards the ‘President’s Office’. Yes, he leaves the packed lunch in the president’s office. And to cut the story short, his romance with the young intelligent woman who happens to be his boss and the owner of the company ended up being his wife. And now you can continue the story however you want it.
The story simply tells us that we should not see things at the short distance. We must strive hard not to see our situation as a hindrance towards getting the happiness we want. Love is not simply the magic it has to offer but an opportunity that we need to grab, not by making things complicated like having a self pity, but to seek what you need and not the object around. An object is a thing we could choose to decorate or to lavish with things so that it would look good, while a person is a gift to fulfill with love and inspiration. Self doubt and insecurity makes things complicated.
It’s like a formula for happiness; if you multiply achievements, profits and social status and divide it to someone you love it’ll made things difficult and complicated. Happiness is a simple addition of love and a subtraction of insecurity to arrive at real happiness. No complications just pure love and happiness.
