Skin care is not something we think much about when we are younger. As we get older though and start to see the effects of poor decisions made when we were younger, we become much more concerned with ways in which we can turn back the clock. While it is not possible to go back and change decisions we made in the past, there are some things we can do to improve the appearance of our skin today. While many people turn to cosmetic surgery, botox and fillers to try and look younger, many of these sorts of procedures can leave you with an artificial, plastic and unnatural look. Given that most people want to look younger, not like a mannequin, natural alternatives to these procedures are often a better way to go, not to mention the increased safety of going the natural route. While many see this as simply a cosmetic concern, it should not be underestimated that many people, often unfortunately, draw a good deal of their feelings of self-worth from how they look. In a culture where beauty and youth are placed on a pedestal, it is really not surprising that so many people go to such great lengths undergoing painful procedures, and great financial burdens, all in the name of beauty. So, what are some of the safe and natural ways to improve the appearance of your skin? Watch out for the sun. The sun is the number one cause of premature aging of the skin. Trying to stay out of the sun from the hours of 10-3, is a good idea. If you will be out in the sun during these hours, try to wear protective clothing or sunscreen. Don't smoke. Smoke, particularly that of cigarettes, has been shown to break down collagen in the skin. This leads to wrinkled, aged looking skin, so staying away from smoke and smokey bars and restaurants is a fantastic idea, at least from your skin's point of view. Vitamin C is a must. While you might think that by drinking that tall glass of orange juice in the morning you've got the whole vitamin C thing covered, studies show that topical application of the antioxidant is more effective for the skin. Use a product that incorporates a high percentage of the vitamin, preferably in a stable form other that plain L-ascorbic acid to ensure its uptake by the skin. Use a good moisturizer. As we get older, our skin naturally produces less oils. Without these natural oils our skin becomes dry, and more prone to wrinkles. By using a good natural face cream, you can prevent your skin from becoming overly dry. This will reduce the appearance of wrinkles and actually work to ward of future wrinkles. If you look for a moisturizer that features sodium hylauronate or hyaluronic acid, you will get the added benefit of plumping up the skin, reducing the appearance of wrinkles even further. There are many safe and healthy alternatives to botox and fillers. While many of these unnatural alternatives are great for a quick fix,they are not permanent solutions. By giving your skin exactly what it needs, and avoiding those things that can damage it, you can help your skin look its very best.
