Obsessive Compulsive disorder or better known as OCD is a serious disorder that can ruin your life ultimately. Normal Functioning may not be plausible if left untreated. Social isolation is likely among friends, co-workers and even family members resulting in loss of important relationships and jobs which in turn may result in depression as well. It is prudent that OCD be treated as soon as signs appear. There is no single cause of the condition but some suggest that it may be due to a chemical imbalance, history of abuse, or behavioral factors and even more. There are many ways to approach the condition and here are just a few of them. Exposure Therapy Just as the name suggests, Exposure Therapy is done by exposing the individual to their fears and obsessions on a regular basis. The therapy aims to stop inappropriate rituals, and their compulsive acts towards these fears and obsessions would be avoided when exposed by proving that the act or ritual is not necessary when confronted. There are many forms of obsessions and the therapy will depend on what they fear the most. For example, one who has social anxiety will be subjected to crowds or if the individual is afraid of germs they may go to a landfill and are only allowed to wash their hands afterwards. This may seem harsh to some but this therapy has proven to be effective for OCD cases by helping them understand the world better. Cognitive Therapy Some cases of obsessive compulsive disorders root from a past experience that may have traumatized the individual or may stem from lack of self-esteem. Cognitive therapy is an approach where conversation between therapist and patient is most important. Through this approach the patient is able to express their feelings, fears and explore more on the reasons of why they do their ritual or compulsive act. By doing so, the therapist aims to find a way to convert their bad actions into productive actions that may benefit the patient and others around. With a skilled therapist, the harmful behavior may be completely taken out. Medication Medication is also used to treat OCD but not in all cases. Medications like Anti-depressants are used and have proven to be effective. This treatment has more than one use for OCD patients because these individuals may sometimes get depression which makes the drug even more useful. Along with therapy, medications may be used to give an extra boost to the brain.
